Full-Time Communications Director

Job Description

Foundry10 is a philanthropic education research organization located in the University District neighborhood in Seattle. We work in collaboration with internal program developers and external partners to conduct research that expands how practitioners, communities, and other researchers think about learning. Foundry10 offers competitive salaries, benefits, and vacation time. This position is located in Seattle, WA and will require the candidate to work in the office when it is safe to do so.

 

Position Summary

 

The Communications Director brings expertise, creativity, and strategy to advance the sharing of research conducted by foundry10 in order to grow the reach of our work and impact how the public and targeted audiences think about learning.  This role is responsible for the direction, implementation, and outcomes of communication content and the quality of our story-telling. 

 

Responsibilities

 

Strategic planning 

  • Lead the establishment of foundry10’s story-telling strategy and vision, content planning strategy and execution in support of organizational mission and goals.
  • Further foundry10’s ability to connect with our wide-array of audiences, including educators, researchers, students, and parents in a professional and accessible way.

 

Communication plan implementation and sharing content oversight  

  • Lead the development, implementation and maintenance of the process for creating sharing content across the organization. 
  • Monitor and support the creation, editing and review of content consistent with organizational voice and brand guidelines.
  • Responsible for final decisions on where, when, and with whom to share our content.
  • Select communication vehicles/outlets to create momentum for our work that generates awareness, interest and enhanced connections with our various communities.
  • Manage the development, distribution and overall quality processes of all print and electronic media including, but not limited to: newsletters, brochures, white papers, blog posts, annual report, social media, and website.
  • Oversee project management initiatives for content generation and sharing related projects.
  • Maintain clear communication between Sharing Team and other branches of the organization to ensure new and ongoing projects are in alignment with org-wide objectives.

 

Outreach relationships

  • Develop innovative outreach strategies and initiatives, both nationally and locally, that help move target audiences from awareness to action to sustained behavior change.
  • Build our media and press contacts; manage and develop those relationships for the benefit of the organization.
  • Be an expert on foundry10’s target audiences, researching demographics and marketing profiles.
  • Advance foundry10’s desire for more inclusive communications, evaluating opportunities to improve the cultural relevancy, accessibility, and social diversity of foundry10’s content.

Team Mentoring and Leadership

  • Mentor and lead our Sharing Team, which is responsible for outreach and communication across our sharing platforms.
  • Support content creation subteams focused on web development, graphic design, video, and writing. 
  • Source and maintain a contractor pool for extra project capacity and team assistance as needed.
  • Plan and monitor team resource needs and initiate new personnel requests.

 

Team Budget Management

  • Facilitate budget planning process and approve annual team budget, prior to submission.
  • Responsible for budget management including tracking and new budget requests. 

 

Data analytics

  • Establish relevant measurable goals for content and employ associated metrics to assess and improve performance
  • Make data-informed strategic and tactical decisions regarding organizational sharing in order to enhance our reach and connection.

Specific Job Requirements

 

Experience:

  • Minimum of five years of related experience in Communications Management.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications or similar field, or at least eight years of equivalent experience in lieu of a degree.
  • Experience in communications management in a nonprofit or research field preferred.
  • Prior professional experience, exposure and interest in education and/or education research is a plus.
  • Experience in successfully leading Communications Team growth that resulted in measurable improvement.
  • Experience developing and implementing a broad range of communications strategies.
  • Strong track record of developing and maintaining media and press contacts and relationships.

 

Required Skills:

 

  • Excellent writing, editing and verbal communication skills. 
  • Strong understanding of design, layout, print and publishing.
  • Highly collaborative leadership abilities. 
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills.
  • Strong track record as an action-oriented implementer who thrives on initiating and managing a variety of projects and initiatives concurrently.
  • Relationship builder with tangible experience connecting and building strong relationships with both internal and external partners and organizations. 
  • Professional presentation skills and abilities.
  • Relevant PR experience including the development of press releases, media kits, and maintaining press contacts.
  • Self-starter, able to work successfully both independently and as part of a team.
  • Knowledge of data analytics usage and experience working with data analytics.
  • Demonstrated strong understanding of team and project management best practices, how to give effective feedback, and coaching.
  • Functional familiarity with graphic design and layout tools (Adobe Creative Cloud, etc.)
  • Solid understanding of web design and development.
  • Working knowledge of major social media sites (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn) and related management tools (Sprout, Hootsuite, etc.)
