Full-Time Laboratory Coordinator
Job Description
The laboratory managed by PI Dr. Ellen Peters at the University of Oregon is seeking a full-time Laboratory Coordinator. Under the direction of Dr. Peters, the lab conducts research aimed at making high impact scientific discoveries in the field of decision science and evidence-based communication techniques including, but not limited to research into numeracy, how affect and emotion influence information processing and decisions, as well as how information processing and decision-making change in complex ways across the adult life span.
The Laboratory Coordinator will be responsible for assisting with the post-pandemic set-up of the research laboratory and managing the daily operations of the laboratory in order to conduct experiments. They are expected to independently perform data compilation and analysis and assist in preparing reports. They will make decisions regarding the ordering of laboratory supplies, maintaining regulatory documentation, and the supervision of undergraduate assistants in the lab. The Lab Coordinator will be responsible for managing the daily operations of the lab and assisting in managing and collecting data for all current projects. The position will require the candidate to work independently and conscientiously on a wide variety of tasks that change day-to-day. Considerable time management and multitasking skills are required. The Lab Coordinator is expected to help recruit, screen, schedule, and run participants and independently perform data management and analysis, while assisting in preparing reports.
The purpose of the position is to assist the PI Dr. Ellen Peters with her laboratory under the direction of the Senior Research Associate/Research Associate, overseeing execution of experiments and data collection using Qualtrics, MediaLab, Mechanical Turk, and other research programs including coordinating lab schedules, maintaining research lab supplies and assisting with supervising and training undergraduate research assistants, compiling results and performing standard descriptive and inferential statistical computations of data generated by both experiment and studies using SPSS, R, or other data analysis software, assisting with dissemination of research results including manuscript, report, and grant preparation, and maintaining lab website using WordPress and Photoshop performs library research related to experimental techniques.
Outside of lab personnel, the Lab Coordinator will regularly interact with other faculty and staff members for the School of Journalism and Communication who wish to use the laboratory space with permission from Dr. Peters. The Lab Coordinator will report directly to the Senior Research Associate/Research Associate or, in their absence, the PI, Dr. Peters. They will supervise undergraduate research assistants in the laboratory who will run the experiments.
Because the experiments will be published in scientific journals and funded by the federal government, job-level decisions will also have an impact on the success metrics of the Center for Science Communication Research (SCR), School of Journalism and Communication, the University of Oregon, federal funders such as the National Science Foundation and National Institutes of Health as well as the federal funding of basic research. The level of independence in decision-making for this position will depend on the level of experience. At a minimum, the Lab Coordinator will meet with the laboratory Senior Research Associate/Research Associate and/or the PI once per week. The guideline for job-related decisions will be to maximize scientific impact and experimental efficiency.
Minimum Requirements
• Bachelor’s in psychology or related field
• One year of experience working in psychology or related behavioral science lab
Professional Competencies
• Ability to develop and troubleshoot laboratory protocols
• Ability to program experiments using Qualtrics, MediaLab, Mechanical Turk, and other research programs
• Ability to communicate effectively in both written and oral formats
• Ability to work both independently, in a small group setting, and one-on-one with students, other staff, and collaborators in a positive and productive manner
• Ability to work efficiently and skillfully with a variety of diverse staff and collaborators
• Ability to prioritize work demands, and coordinate research protocols with other staff, and students
• Excellent organizational skills and careful attention to detail
• High level of self-motivation and integrity
• Basic computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Word
• Willingness and ability to take charge of projects rather than only complete assigned duties
Preferred Qualifications
• Ability to perform standard descriptive and inferential statistical computations of data using SPSS, R, or other data analysis software
• Demonstrated independence and competence in managing multiple ongoing tasks in a social science laboratory setting
