About Your New Team:
NSIN is a U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) organization with the mission to build networks of innovators that generate new solutions to national security problems. NSIN does this by building communities of non-traditional defense problem solvers from the academic and venture communities, exposing these communities to national security problems through direct interaction with DoD end-users, and supporting the further development and transition of these solutions into the DoD. The principal way in which NSIN achieves its mission is through three mutually supporting portfolios of programs: National Service, Collaboration, and Acceleration. NSIN’s Regional Network Team will be physically located in more than 35 different locations throughout the United States and is responsible for building the new communities of problem-solvers through which NSIN executes its programs. About Your New Role:
The Director of Operations is responsible for managing the performance and growth of NSIN’s Regional Network Team. In this role, you will manage this team, which consists of Regional Directors embedded in commercial innovation hubs, and University Program Directors embedded at Tier I research universities across the country. Teamwork is core to the Director of Operations’ role, and you will work closely with NSIN’s three Portfolio Directors and the Chief of Staff. This position reports directly to NSIN’s Managing Director and is a member of the NSIN Leadership Team.
As the Director of Operations, you will lead and manage NSIN’s programmatic planning, network expansion, and NSIN’s operating model implementation. You will directly supervise NSIN’s 11 Regional Directors, who are primarily charged with discovering problems across DOD units and organizations, and sourcing those DoD problems to be solved through NSIN’s programs. In the last calendar year, NSIN has nearly doubled in size, so you will have the chance to manage a team in the midst of accelerated growth and expansion.
The Director of Operations regularly interfaces with senior academic administrators and faculty, senior defense officials, and C-Suite level positions in the venture community on behalf of the Managing Director, and is adept at managing relationships and working with external entities. As the Director of Operations, you will have the opportunity to turn NSIN’s vision into operational reality, and will be principally responsible for reaching the DoD organizations that NSIN exists to serve, and the non-traditional problem solvers that the DoD needs to solve its national security problems.
What We are Looking for in a Teammate:
- A deep knowledge of the venture, academic, and defense ecosystems;
- prior experience working within or among federal government agencies, preferably within the DoD;
- at least ten years of relevant public and private sector management experience, including experience managing geographically dispersed teams;
- business development or strategic relationship management experience;
- an innate need for teamwork, and the desire to work in a highly collaborative, matrixed team environment;
- experience leading an organization or team through periods of rapid scaling and growth;
- a willingness and aptitude to operate successfully as part of a dispersed team. The Director of Operations is based at NSIN HQ, but manages a team dispersed throughout the country;
- an unquenchable passion to change the way that DoD solves its problems. NSIN is engaged in hard work and there are long, tough days fighting a daunting bureaucracy;
