SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES
Located just outside of Seattle, WA, Lake Washington Institute of Technology (LWTech) was founded in 1949, and is the only public institute of technology in Washington State, that provides students with the latest cutting edge skills relevant to today’s workplace. LWTech offers ten applied bachelor’s degrees, more than 40 associate degrees and 93 professional certificates, in 43 areas of study, including STEM-focused programs in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Summary:
The coordinator of the WorkFirst program supports low-income students receiving Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) from DSHS in order to help them reach their educational and career goals. This includes marketing, recruiting, student intake, determining eligibility, advising, educational planning, retention services, awarding WorkFirst funding, and tracking student data. This position will assist prospective and current WorkFirst students in accessing college and community resources related to financial aid, Workforce funding, emergency assistance, scholarships, employment, food insecurity, and other basic needs. The coordinator will partner and collaborate with other Workforce programs (WFD), the financial aid office, the Basic Education department, DSHS, state and community-based organizations, and other departments throughout the college. This is an exempt position that reports to the Assistant Director of Workforce Development.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
• Coordinate the daily operations of the WorkFirst program, working closely with the WFD Director, Assistant Director, and team to develop strategies to support WorkFirst students and program objectives; recommend new initiatives to improve program outcomes
• Determine eligibility, provide intake, and enroll students into the WorkFirst program; manage the DSHS WorkFirst referral process
• Advise WorkFirst students using a holistic case-management model to increase retention, program completion, and employment
• Determine tuition, book, and student support awards for WorkFirst eligible students, including tracking of awards and reconciling budget; work closely with financial aid, bookstore, cashier and other Workforce funding sources
• Assist prospective and current students in completing financial aid, emergency grant, Workforce, and scholarship applications
• Support students taking English Language (ELL) classes in transitioning to college programs; work closely with ELL faculty and staff in preparing students to be college ready
• Serve as an advocate for students in academic and financial matters, navigating college processes, resolving DSHS issues, accessing community-based resources, and balancing school-family responsibilities
• Maintain regular communications with students through a variety of methods, including phone, email, mail, and online and in person meetings
• Develop and maintain program and student tracking systems, including student files, attendance reports, and advising notes; gather, compile and analyze data; maintain student records in CTCLink, EJAS, and other systems
• Assist the Director in preparing and managing the WorkFirst budgets consistent with student need, college policies, and state and federal regulations
• Develop reports for internal and external sources
• Support other WFD programs and students, as needed
• Participate in WFD, Student Services, college, and local and statewide meetings, trainings, and events; participate in college system professional conferences, in-service activities, and committees
• Maintain a working knowledge of federal and state policies related to the WorkFirst program, including an understanding of DSHS programs, TANF eligibility, and public assistance; assist the Directors in updating and maintaining the WorkFirst policy and procedure manual
• Develop collaborative partnerships with community organizations serving low income, historically marginalized, and under-represented individuals and families; maintain an updated list of agencies, support services, and family resources
• Strategize and coordinate with the Workforce Development team and internal and external partners to improve services, leverage resources, and assist students in reaching their educational and employment goals
• Ensure areas of responsibility operate within the policies and procedures of the college and applicable governing agencies
• Assist college administrators with strategic planning efforts and other initiatives as necessary
• Other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
• Sufficient combination of education, work, and lived experience to demonstrate ability to meet the following expectations (generally, competitive candidates will have a bachelor’s degree or higher and two or more years of educational counseling, case management, social work, advising or related experience in the community and technical college system)
• Work with individuals of varied ethnicity, ages, backgrounds, and abilities; including low-income, first generation, English language learners, historically marginalized, and under-represented college students; experience working with families/parents preferred
• Apply case management processes to advising students
• Use technology to improve services to students (e.g Microsoft Office programs; CTCLink, EJAS, or other specialized databases related to higher education)
• Use financial aid systems and track financial aid data
• Ability to navigate complex policies and procedures
• Work collaboratively in a team environment
• Experience with Opportunity Grant, Basic Food Employment and Training (BFET), WorkFirst, Worker Retraining, or other higher education workforce programs preferred
• Experience supporting English Language Learners in their transition to college programs preferred
• Strong interpersonal, written and oral communication skills

Compensation & Work Schedule
Salary is $5,836 per month. This is a full-time, 40 hours per week position. Typically, office hours are Monday-Friday from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm. This position offers flexible hours and hybrid schedule. This is subject to change based on the institution and division requirements.
