Transportation Worker I
Long-Term Temporary, Full Time 40 Hours/week
Locations: Ashe, Alleghany, Avery, Caldwell, Surry, Watauga, Wilkes, or Yadkin County
Hourly Salary: $17.50 without Commercial Driver’s License, or $18.50 with Commercial Driver’s License.

The Challenge
We are hiring 14 full time temporary transportation workers to join our Division 11 team in Ashe, Alleghany, Avery, Caldwell, Surry, Watauga, Wilkes, and Yadkin counties. Help rebuild western NC! These roles are for full time, long term temporary positions that may last for 11 months, may be renewed, and may also become temp-to-perm opportunities.
In this role you will:
- Operate hand tools, power equipment, vehicles, and heavy equipment used in the preventative maintenance, repair, and construction of roads and roadside features for the State’s highway and road systems.
- Inspect, ensure work zone safety, and participate in snow & ice removal.
- Flag and assist with the maintenance/repair/project completion using standard tools and equipment, including tractors with attachments, curb machines, cutoff saws, dump trucks, small wheel and sheep foot rollers, vibrator roller compactors, pulverizer mixers, and pneumatic tire rollers.
- Assist paint crews.
- Erect road signs and assist Electronics Technicians with maintenance/installation of signals.
- Operate hand tools for sign installation and replacement.
- Operate dump truck, boom tractor, paint line removing machine, thermoplastic machine, trencher, and edge-line paint gun.
- Provide vegetation control, debris removal, and snow shoveling/plowing.
- Operate a dump and flatbed truck.
- Assist in grass and wildflower installation and maintenance.
What You Bring
- A commercial driver’s license (or you can get one through on-the-job training with us within 360 days of hire).
- A team player who can work in a close team environment and independently.
- Dependable – you arrive to work on time.
- Experience doing manual labor.
- Experience using power tools such as chainsaws, weed eaters, skill saws, drills, compactors, or jackhammers.
- An excellent work ethic with good ability to listen, be safe, and follow verbal and written instructions.
- Safety toe footwear.
Education & Experience
- High school/GED diploma; or
- An equivalent combination of education and experience.
