Job Description
- Operate oxygen/acetylene cutting and electric arc, mig, and tig welding equipment to fuse metal parts in situations where weld strength is a necessity, such as in the fabrication and repair of parts, vehicles, and heavy equipment.
- Receive work orders from our supervisor with general instructions regarding the welding, fabrication, and assembling new equipment.
- Have your work reviewed by our supervisor for adequacy and quality of assembly and welding by an evaluation of the performance of the repaired parts and equipment.
- Lays out, cuts, and fits material for welding.
- Join metal pieces by applying the torch or electric arc to surfaces and melting welding rods and flux into the joints.
- Burn/cut through metal by melting and oxidizing with a hot flame and free oxygen.
- Examine parent metals and alloys to determine strength and heating properties and determine heat to be applied.
- Make metal articles such as brackets, pipe hangers, braces, bolts, and repair parts for machinery, trucks, implements, and equipment.
- Help load and unload tires, assist mechanics as needed, keep offices, restrooms, shop, and shop yard clean, and grass cut.
- Progressive experience in oxygen/acetylene cutting and electric arc, mig and tig welding.
- Working knowledge of the principles and methods of oxygen/acetylene cutting and electric ARC, MIG, and TIG welding.
- Demonstrated ability to layout, cut and fit material for welding.
- Experience performing welding and cutting tasks, including structural repairs, modifications, maintenance and fabrications.
- Experience dismantling and reassembling welded parts.
- Demonstrated ability to work from and follow verbal and written directions/drawings and to copy/reproduce broken items.
- Ability to perform welding in a variety of physical positions.
- Strength and ability to move relatively heavy objects and perform manual labor for significant periods of time.
- Basic computer knowledge in computer/email applications.
- Skill in the use and care of equipment and tools used in performing work assignments.
- A good understanding of GPS and road maps.
- Ability to work indoors and outdoors.
- Steel toe safety shoes.
- High school/GED diploma, and
- 2+ years of acetylene or electric arc welding experience; or
- Equivalent combination of education and experience.
- You will be required to complete our NCDOT Materials and Test Welding Certification.
