Freelance Website Designer and Developer (Freelance/Contract)
Job Description
Kern Design Lab is a collective of creatives focused on human-centered design. We take inspiration from real people and their experiences and incorporate that feedback into our creative process. We provide graphic design, website design and development, branding, and strategic communication services. Our team works remotely across the US, with headquarters in Denver, CO. We use our craft to uplift the work of organizations whose missions align with our values. Teaming up with organizations and businesses we believe in helps us amplify, strengthen, and empower our local and global communities. We support nonprofit organizations, businesses, and government agencies working to promote social progress.
Kern Design Lab is searching for an independent contractor who can lead the design and development of functional, engaging, and easy-to-use websites. Front-end web design experience (HTML, CSS, Javascript, jQuery, and AJAX) is required. Experience designing and building sites in WordPress is required. Experience using other CMS platforms such as Squarespace, Wix, and similar is preferred. Fluency in PHP, creating custom themes, using plugins, site migration and security, and search engine optimization is required. Must have experience with responsive website design.
The ideal candidate will bring solid organizational structure for project management, attention to detail and best practices, a high degree of professionalism and integrity, and comfort working in a growing entrepreneurial environment that ebbs and flows. You are an experienced web designer and developer interested in joining a collective of creatives—who value collaboration, integrity, and promoting social progress—and growing with us as our workload increases. You are interested in remote, part-time work with flexible project deadlines and milestones to work with your schedule. You are available to join occasional project calls with clients as needed per the project.
Values
Kern values approachability, collaboration, integrity, and a commitment to social progress. Our approach includes compassion, care, and respect for our clients, teammates, and partners. The ideal candidate will have shared values with our team, including:
- Approachability and Collaboration: You develop and maintain strong, collaborative working relationships with a diverse group of stakeholders and include stakeholder feedback in the creative process, bringing in voices from marginalized communities, such as people of color, people with disabilities, people experiencing poverty and homelessness, immigrants, and people who are or were formerly incarcerated. Client collaboration, data-driven decision making, and stakeholder engagement are integral to our creative process.
- Integrity: You have a track record of accomplishing ambitious goals and getting results even when there are obstacles. You set a high bar and meet it because you think three, or 30, steps ahead to anticipate hurdles and develop sustainable solutions. You plan backward and involve stakeholders appropriately. You communicate your challenges and progress effectively and are respectful in your approach.
- Commitment to social progress: You strive to recognize how your own identities show up in work, and welcome, reflect on and act on feedback with an eye toward continuous learning about race, ability, and other lines of difference.About the Position
