About the Investigative Journalism Foundation
The Investigative Journalism Foundation is Canada’s leading nonprofit newsroom focused on public interest journalism. We are a new kind of media outlet, built around databases on who donates to politicians across Canada, who lobbies them, and how the government spends your money.
As a nonprofit, nonpartisan media outlet, our primary purpose is to serve the public. We do this by publishing in-depth investigative journalism that speaks truth to power. Our databases are also used by other journalists, academics, policymakers and individuals seeking to increase transparency and strengthen Canadian democracy.
We believe in a collaborative model and are proud to partner with other media outlets and post-secondary institutions to ensure our journalism has as wide a reach as possible.
About this job
This is a four-month internship. Most of the IJF’s team is based in Toronto, but we’re happy to hear from candidates based elsewhere in Canada.
Please note: This position is funded by Canada Summer Jobs and can only be filled by someone under 30 who has a valid Social Insurance Number and is a citizen, permanent resident, or refugee. Please check out the detailed requirements if you’re not sure if you qualify. If that’s you, wonderful! Please keep reading.
Ideal candidates include, but are not limited to, recent graduates of a technical, vocational or degree program with experience in computer science, web design or front-end development. We welcome applications from individuals identifying with groups traditionally underrepresented in journalism due to gender, race, ethnicity, sexuality, indigeneity, religion, immigration background, or disability.
You will play a key role in enhancing our data-driven journalism efforts. This dual-focused role will primarily involve creating interactive data visualizations for front-end user engagement, as well as helping us launch newer datasets that we have recently acquired.
The position is a great way to learn from some of Canada’s top web developers, data scientists and investigative journalists. Successful candidates will be excited about working at a mission-driven nonprofit that uses journalism to strengthen Canadian democracy every day. We are a workplace that promotes remote and flexible work arrangements and emphasizes work-life balance.
Not sure you meet all the qualifications listed below? Please apply anyway. We’re looking for talented people who share our passion for making Canada a better place. Experience matters less than a desire to learn and grow. We’re committed to building an inclusive environment.
Requirements:
  • Experience in one or more of our key technical areas:
  • Backend development in Python, especially using Docker
  • SQL database administration, especially with PostgreSQL
  • Frontend development with Typescript and React, especially with Next.js
  • Someone who is organized, focused and able to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • A team player who wants to grow with the organization.
The following would be an asset:
  • Experience with digital publishing and content management systems
  • Experience with HTTP and browser automation
  • Experience displaying complex data in informative and interesting ways
Depending on qualifications, you’ll:
  • Contribute to the IJF’s data collection pipeline
  • Build and maintain the IJF’s website, including publishing and interactive databases

How to Apply

How to apply:
Please fill out the answers in this form. It will ask for your CV, a cover letter telling us how your skills are a fit for the IJF’s mission, as well as links to three things you’ve built of which you’re particularly proud.
The three projects from your portfolio are by far the most important part of your application. If your relevant experience isn’t shareable, let us know in your cover letter.
We’re looking forward to hearing from you.
