About the Chicago Humanities Festival
The Chicago Humanities Festival is a non-profit year-round festival of conversations, performances, and experiences. In our history, we have produced more than 140 programs annually, reaching a live audience of nearly 50,000 adults and 12,000 youth. We have presented over 3,000 outstanding speakers, including: 10 Nobel Laureates; 73 Pulitzer Prize winners; 56 MacArthur “Genius” Fellows; 34 Academy Award, Tony, and Grammy winners; and 18 James Beard Award winners. Our dedicated YouTube channel has had over 4.4 million views. Additional information is available at chicagohumanities.org. In response to the pandemic in 2020, CHF pivoted to hosting events virtually on our YouTube and Zoom platforms. In 2021, we will host around 60 events virtually, while planning for a return to in-person gatherings later this year.
Position Description:
The Chicago Humanities Festival seeks a tech-savvy, driven, creative problem solver to fill a temporary position (June/July–November/December 2021, 30-40 hours per week) to help the organization run its livestreamed and pre-recorded virtual events. As the Virtual Event Producer, you will have hands-on experience in developing the virtual and/or hybrid event experience. This role is part of the Production and Audience Experience team, serving as project manager and technical director for our lineup of approximately 30 virtual events this summer and fall hosted on our YouTube and Zoom platforms.
Job Responsibilities:
- Lead as technical director for livestreamed and pre-recorded virtual events, running or supporting events as needed.
- Lead a small virtual events team, which includes a video production vendor. Liaise and maintain vendor relationships, ensuring clear communication and quality control.
- Attend internal programming and staff meetings.
- Maintain Airtable database with all relevant information, updating various trackers and systems.
- Create Run of Show documents and prepare any additional media.
- Advance all show information with pertinent parties, internally and externally.
- Collaborate with internal staff on video recordings and uploads.
- Work with Marketing department to ensure branding is visible at all events.
- Work with virtual accessible service providers such as captioners, ASL interpreters, and audio describers through Zoom and other platforms.
- Consult on various digital projects.
Qualifications:
- Minimum 2 years of live/virtual event production experience. Technical directing or similar experience in live broadcast a plus.
- Demonstrated expertise with virtual event/webinar/content hosting platforms (broadcast software such as Wirecast Studio Software or OBS, Zoom meetings and webinars, YouTube Studio) with a proven understanding of system integrations to support the complex technology landscape needed for large-scale virtual events.
- Ideal candidates will provide their own tech equipment, subject to CHF testing and approval (ability to stream at 1080p x 60fps is the standard). Wirecast license a plus.
- Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and work on multiple projects simultaneously, under minimal supervision.
- A highly-organized team player, able to multi-task with several projects simultaneously in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
- Grace under pressure, flexibility, resourcefulness, and assertiveness in problem solving.
- Dependable, detail-orientated, and enthusiastic about delivering exceptional arts and culture events.
- Excellent communication skills. Must be comfortable communicating publicly while narrating instructions to presenters, training a team, etc.
- Tech-savvy with some experience with database and system management tools (Airtable, Microsoft Office Suite, Google Suite) and design tools (Adobe Creative Suite, Canva).
- Familiarity with both Mac and PC computer environments.
- Ability to work evenings and weekends per our events schedule.
- General familiarity accessible services such as ASL interpretation, closed captions, audio description, etc considered a plus.
Contract, Hours, and Compensation:
This position is a 5-6 month contract working 30-40 hours/week at $24/hour. The contract runs June/July through November/December, start date depending on availability.
The Virtual Event Producer works a schedule that includes:
- daytime hours Monday-Friday
- evening hours approximately 3 days per week (to run livestreams)
- occasionally a weekend day, if needed based on event schedule
Work Location:
As is true of our entire staff, this role will work remotely until a potential return to our Chicago office in summer or fall 2021. This role can stay remote or, if residing in Chicago, is welcome to work in our office upon our return.
