Full-Time USENIX Development/Grants Program Manager

Job Description

USENIX is a nonprofit membership association that supports the computing systems communities by organizing conferences and related events, sharing conference content broadly, and publishing computer science research. The development team works with corporate and institutional sponsors and entities, including the federal government, that help support these conference-related activities, as well as the USENIX mission as a whole. 

The development and sponsorship team is responsible for:

  • Maintaining and expanding relationships with our current sponsors and supporters
  • Donor outreach and donation management
  • Sourcing new sponsors with awareness of other related conferences and an eye on technical and computer science news
  • Selling exhibit space and creating specific sponsor opportunities at USENIX events, and managing sponsor and exhibitor presence on site
  • Coordinating federal and private grants to support events and the organization as a whole, including student and diversity grants
  • Managing all details of sponsor contracts from initiation through completion
  • Optimizing processes and operations of the department overall

In addition to supporting the Development and Sponsorship team overall, the Development Grants Program Manager would report to the Development Director and create a new direction in grant opportunities and DEI programs, with a focus on: 

  • Managing current grant programs 
  • Pursuing new grant and funding opportunities 
  • Assisting current fundraising and major donor outreach 
  • Assessing possible philanthropic directions for the organization with emphases on expanding diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) at USENIX conferences and among our communities, and enhancing opportunities for students.

Primary responsibilities will evolve in collaboration with Development Director and Executive Director, and may include:

  • In collaboration with Development Director and Conference team, manage student travel grant awards, including tracking metrics, writing final reports for funding agencies, and assisting with deadlines and scheduling
  • Work closely with leadership team to establish goals and objectives for new DEI and student programs 
  • Work closely with leadership team to prioritize objectives for new areas of grant funding
  • Investigate new sources of grant and foundation revenue in support of existing mission and new programs as they evolve
  • Work with conference program organizers to identify potential mentorship and educational programs as suits our mission
  • Identify and pursue grants from institutions (including government), corporations, and foundations to fund USENIX initiatives and operating costs
  • Lead grant application, design, creation, submission and in the event of successful reviews, award negotiation
  • Collaborate with conference organizers, attendees, Board members and fellow associations to further the USENIX mission and presence in the tech community

  • Experience with federal grant management, including tools such as the System for Award Management (SAM) and National Science Foundation (NSF) FastLane System

Requirements

  • U.S.-based and eligible to work in the U.S. 
  • Minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent
  • 5+ years of experience in a similar role
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; superior written and verbal abilities
  • Ability to function well in a fully distributed team: self-motivated, reliable, communicative, transparent, adaptable, and highly responsive
  • Ability to manage frequent high-pressure situations with good humor and patience
  • Strong work ethic, with the ability to maintain calm productivity in a fast-paced environment
  • The ability to understand and convey the value and mission of USENIX 
  • Ability to travel and attend USENIX events and in-person staff gatherings as needed (2 – 6 times per year)
  • Strong and frequent sense of humor 
  • Familiarity with Mac OS, G suite tools, project management software, Salesforce (or similar CRM), and Cvent (or similar event management system) 

Compensation and Location

The salary for this full-time, exempt position will be commensurate with experience, in the range of $80K-$90K. We offer a generous benefits package including health, vision, dental, retirement, holidays, and vacation. This is a remote position; candidates must be US-based.
