CCDH is expanding our Policy and Partnerships Team and looking to hire a passionate, committed, and proactive UK Parliamentary Affairs Officer.

This role will be the eyes, ears and voice of CCDH in Westminster and beyond, working to create strong relationships with Ministers, MPs and advisors as well as our partners in civil society. The postholder will build interest in and awareness of regulatory action using the Online Safety Act, and grow political appetite for further legislative strengthening to make online spaces safer.

The postholder will genuinely love working in political spaces and will have demonstrated experience in government and public affairs, building collaborative and inclusive strategies to win, and a willingness to champion solutions to addressing online harms in the UK and globally.

About the Role

The Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) is an international, not-for-profit research and advocacy organisation that seeks to disrupt the architecture of online hate and misinformation. CCDH has been at the forefront of unmasking how online platforms and search engines drive radicalization, online harm, and pollute the information ecosystem. We are agile, influential and have a global impact – with offices in London and Washington D.C. and connections globally.

We work across a range of different areas, from protecting children online to countering identity-based hate and researching the harms of generative artificial intelligence. Policymakers, regulators, and elected officials are a key audience for us as we advance solutions, and in the UK, ensure regulation is enforced under the Online Safety Act. The Policy and Partnerships team is globally minded and impact-oriented, leading the charge on social media reform in the US and ensuring regulation is fit for purpose in the UK and EU.

CCDH’s policy work in the UK seeks to strengthen the implementation of the Online Safety Act, secure robust protections and access to data for researchers, and build the case for reasonable safeguards for emerging technology products such generative AI. A successful candidate has demonstrated experience in working with government and political stakeholders to translate an advocacy strategy into policy impact.

This role will support the development of and deliver CCDH’s policy goals related to social media and technology reform in collaboration with the UK Policy Manager and Head of Policy.

Job Responsibilities

• Build and maintain relationships with Members of Parliament and their advisors.
• Ability to represent the organisation externally, hosting and attending events in Portcullis House
• Monitor key legislation, speeches and parliamentary committees, with a view to identifying opportunities to advance our agenda in Westminster
• Provide inputs and context to CCDH written materials such as outreach to political stakeholders, policy briefs, memos and consultations.
• Work with the UK partnerships coordinator and policy manager, design policy roundtables, public affairs events, and interventions with political stakeholders to uplift CCDH’s work.

Person Specification

Essential

• 5+ years of relevant experience in politics, for example working for an MP, lobbying or government relations
• Deep knowledge of how the UK Parliament and civil service works and awareness of current affairs, including knowledge of political parties and Whitehall
• A real talent for networking and strong interpersonal skills; strong verbal and written communication skills, particularly when communicating to diverse audiences.
• Ability to analyse and clearly communicate while navigating timelines and obstacles with your team and external stakeholders.

Desirable

• Demonstrated experience in policy analysis, development, and strategic planning.
• Engagement and/or involved in existing networks related to the current debates on social media reform, online harms, disinformation, discrimination, and online safety policies.
• Demonstrated commitment to creating change and generating consensus through working with diverse audiences across policymaking, campaigning, and the public.
• Experience interpreting and using data to inform communications, public affairs and/or policymaking.
• Familiarity with public affairs monitoring tools and techniques
• Experience working with any of the UK devolved parliaments

Compensation Package

• Location: London, UK
• Salary: £45,000- £50,000
