Job Description
- Perform a wide range of maintenance tasks in preventive maintenance, repair, and construction of state-maintained roads and roadside features.
- Serve as the lead worker on a highway maintenance crew.
- Install traffic & erosion control devices.
- Clear rights of way.
- Perform roadway grading.
- Machine unpaved roads.
- Conduct pavement repair, pipe installation or other drainage tasks.
- Inspect contract work and monitor manual tasks.
- Perform emergency response including traffic accident clean-up, snow and ice removal, and other emergencies as they occur.
- Operate various equipment including bulldozers, excavators, backhoes, skid steers, tandem dump trucks, front end loaders, tractor trailers, motor graders, rollers, and other heavy equipment as needed.
- Knowledge of Intermediate Work Zone Safety & NCDOT Workplace Safety policy and practices.
- Experience in one of the following: shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation, or asphalt patching.
- Demonstrated ability to supervise and train others in equipment operations and direct work crew daily activities.
- Experience in snow and ice removal operations.
- Experience operating at least 2 pieces of the following equipment: backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, crack sealing machine, track excavator, skid steer, or sweeper.
- Working knowledge of the principles involved in the operation and use of construction equipment.
- Ability to perform assigned tasks and to follow verbal and written instructions.
- Strength to repeatedly lift up to 50 pounds.
- Agility to climb, bend, and traverse steep and uneven terrain and work in extreme temperature conditions.
- Ability to get a Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker (N) endorsement. This can be obtained through on-the-job training with a 180 day grace period to obtain the learner’s permit and 360 days to obtain the License with endorsement.
- You will be subject to emergency call backs and scheduled night work during adverse weather or other extreme circumstances.
- We may require work during nontraditional work hours including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Safety toe shoes are required.
- A pre-employment drug testing is required.
- We will do a background check of your employers for the past 2 years for controlled substances/alcohol testing.
- High school/GED diploma, and
- 6+ years of relevant experience; or
- An equivalent combination of education and experience.
