The Challenge
We are looking for 2 experienced Transportation Worker IV’s to join our Durham County Maintenance team.
 
In this role, you will:
    • Perform a wide range of maintenance tasks in preventive maintenance, repair, and construction of state-maintained roads.
    • Install traffic & erosion control devices.
    • Clear rights of way.
    • Perform roadway grading and machining of unpaved roads.
    • Do pavement repair, pipe installation, and other drainage tasks.
    • Inspect contract work and monitor manual tasks.
    • Operate equipment including bulldozers, excavators, backhoes, skid steers, tandem dump trucks, front end loaders, tractor trailers, motor graders, rollers, and other heavy equipment.
 
What You Bring
    • Knowledge of Intermediate Work Zone Safety & NCDOT Workplace Safety policy and practices.
    • Experience in 1+ of the following:  shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation, or asphalt patching.
    • Demonstrated ability to supervise and train others in equipment operations and direct the daily activities of a work crew.
    • Experience in snow and ice removal operations.
    • Experience operating at 2+ pieces of the following equipment:  backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, crack sealing machine, track excavator, skid steer or sweeper.
    • Working knowledge of the principles involved in the operation and use of the equipment.
    • Ability to perform tasks and to follow verbal and written instructions as directed by supervisor.
    • Strength to repeatedly lift up to 50 pounds.
    • Agility to climb, bend, and traverse steep and uneven terrain.
    • Able to work in extreme temperature conditions.
    • A Class A Commercial Driver’s License with N endorsement required.  (Don’t have it?  Still apply! You can get it through our on-the-job training within 360 days of hire!)
    • Safety toe shoes.
Notes
    • You will be involved in emergency response including traffic accident clean-up, snow and ice removal, and other emergencies as they occur.
    • This role is subject to emergency call back and scheduled night work during adverse weather or other extreme circumstances.
    • We may require work during non-traditional work hours including nights, weekends, and holidays.
    • A pre-employment drug testing is required, and we will do a background check of your employers for the past 3 years for controlled substances/alcohol testing.
 
Education & Experience
    • High school/GED diploma, and
    • 6+ years of relevant experience; or
    • An equivalent combination of education and experience.
