Job Description
- Operate road building and maintenance equipment on and off road.
- Drive heavy equipment and vehicles with adjustable attachments to sweep debris from paved surfaces.
- Mow grass and weeds.
- Remove snow and ice and apply salt/salt brine.
- Drive trucks to transport crews and equipment to work sites and drive truck-mounted equipment.
- Haul and spread sand, gravel, and clay materials to fill washouts and repair road shoulders.
- Spread sand, dirt, and other loose materials onto surfaces.
- Move soil materials to locations where needed.
- Dump, spread, and tamp asphalt using pneumatic tampers to repair joints and patch broken pavement.
- Dump materials into/on designated areas.
- Compact materials to create level bases.
- Spread concrete or other aggregate mixtures.
- Clean and clear debris from culverts, catch basins, drop inlets, ditches, and other drainage structures.
- Remove debris/vegetation with equipment from work sites.
- Remove litter and debris from roadways, including debris from rock and mud slides.
- Inspect industrial/commercial equipment to ensure proper operation.
- Operate equipment/vehicles to clear construction sites or move materials.
- Perform manual tasks associated with highway maintenance and repair, including asphalt/concrete pavement maintenance, drainage ditch maintenance, pipe and drainage structure installation/replacement/repair, vegetation control, debris removal, and storm response.
- Perform flagging operations and facilitate work zone traffic control.
- Use hand tools, including chain saws, rakes, bush axes, shovels, power tamps, concrete saws, etc.
- Informally supervise 2+ staff daily in road maintenance activities.
- Organize, plan, and prioritize their work.
- Develop specific goals and plans to accomplish project goals.
- Provide training as needed for junior Transportation Workers in accordance with NCDOT Training and On the Job policies.
- Transport inmates for work details.
- Knowledge of Intermediate Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety policy and practices.
- Experience in one of the following: shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation, or asphalt patching.
- Demonstrated ability to supervise and train others in equipment operations and direct work crew daily activities.
- Snow and ice removal operations experience.
- Experience operating 2+ pieces of the following equipment: backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, track excavators, and skid steer,
- Understanding and ability to use Erosion Control Devices, two-way radio communications, and Work Zone Traffic controls.
- Must have the ability to plan, develop and lay out traffic control in a work zone for 2-lane roads.
- Ability to respond to emergencies, including snow and ice, and other maintenance emergencies.
- Dexterity to use hands and arms when handling, installing, positioning, and moving materials.
- Able to receive and give effective written and verbal communications in English language.
- Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time, operate equipment that vibrates, and perform essential functions in extreme hot and/or cold weather.
- Agility to climb, bend, traverse steep and uneven terrain.
- Strength to safely and repetitively lift 80+ pounds.
- Agility to walk and stand on uneven terrain.
- Good eyesight (glasses are ok) and agility to bend.
- A Class A Commercial Driver’s License with N endorsement. (Note: if you don’t have this you can get it after we hire you through our on-the-job training within 360 days of hire.)
- Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.
- Ability to obtain and maintain an inmate card from the NC Department of Public Safety to transport inmates.
- Safety toe footwear.
- You will be exposed to extreme conditions such as ice, snow, dust, extreme heat and cold, high volumes of traffic and heavy construction equipment.
- You will be subject to emergency call backs, scheduled night work, and out of town travel during adverse weather or other extreme circumstances.
- Safety-toe shoes are required.
- We will conduct a pre-employment criminal history check, drug test, and check with your employers over the past 2 years for alcohol/drug abuse.
- High school/GED diploma, and
- 5+ years of relevant experience; or
- An equivalent combination of education and experience.
