Job Description
- Perform maintenance tasks in preventive maintenance, repair, and construction of state-maintained roads and roadside features.
- Install traffic & erosion control devices.
- Perform chip seal operations.
- Perform crack seal operations.
- Repair pavement.
- Lead snow removal operations.
- Inspect contract work.
- Transport inmates for work detail.
- Operate heavy equipment including chip spreaders, tandem dump trucks, quad dump trucks, front end loaders, tractor trailers, lee boy asphalt maintainers, rollers, and other pieces.
- Provide emergency response including traffic accident clean-up, snow and ice removal, and other emergencies.
- Knowledge of standard road maintenance and construction procedures.
- Experience in shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation, and/or asphalt patching.
- Strength to repeatedly lift up to 50 pounds.
- Experience operating 2+ pieces of the following equipment: backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, asphalt patcher crack sealing machine, track excavators, skid steer, or sweeper.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Agility to stand and walk on uneven surfaces and slopes.
- Good communications skills with ability to speak, listen, and understand English.
- Ability to work in extreme conditions, such as ice, snow, difficult terrain, dust, extreme heat and cold, and in high volumes of traffic and heavy construction equipment.
- Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.
- A Commercial Driver’s License (Note: If you don’t have this, you can get it after you are hired through our on-the-job training program within 360 days of hire.)
- Safety toe shoes.
- Ability to acquire and maintain an inmate card from the NC Department of Public Safety.
- This role is subject to emergency call backs and scheduled night work during adverse weather or other circumstances.
- We will conduct a pre-employment drug test and a background check of your previous employers for the past 2 years for drug/alcohol abuse.
- 21+ years old, and
- High school/GED diploma, and
- 3+ years of relevant experience; or
- An equivalent combination of education and experience.
