Job Description
- Operate on- and off-road road building and road maintenance equipment.
- Drive heavy equipment and vehicles with adjustable attachments to sweep debris from paved surfaces, mow grass and weeds, remove snow and ice and apply salt/brine.
- Drive trucks to transport crews and equipment to work sites.
- Drive trucks or truck-mounted equipment.
- Haul and spread sand, gravel, and clay material to fill washouts and repair road shoulders.
- Spread sand, dirt, or other loose materials onto surfaces.
- Move and dump soil materials to locations where needed.
- Dump, spread, and tamp asphalt using pneumatic tampers to repair joints and patch broken pavement.
- Compact materials to create level bases.
- Spread concrete or other aggregate mixtures.
- Clean and clear debris from culverts, catch basins, drop inlets, ditches, and other drainage structures.
- Remove debris/vegetation with equipment from work sites.
- Remove litter and debris from roadways, including debris from rock and mud slides.
- Inspect industrial and commercial equipment to ensure proper operation.
- Operate equipment or vehicles to clear construction sites or move materials.
- Perform road building activities, maintenance activities and maintain highway safety.
- Perform manual tasks associated with maintenance and repair of the highway system, including asphalt and concrete pavement maintenance, drainage ditch maintenance, pipe and drainage structure installation/replacement/repair, vegetation control, debris removal, and storm response.
- Perform flagging operations and facilitate work zone traffic control.
- Understand and use Erosion Control Devices, 2-way radio communications, and basic Work Zone Traffic Controls.
- Respond to emergencies, including snow, ice, and other maintenance emergencies.
- Use hand tools, including chainsaws, rakes, bush axes, shovels, power tamps, and concrete saws.
- Perform manual labor handling, installing, positioning, and moving materials.
- Transport inmates for work details.
- Ability to plan, develop, and lay out traffic control in a work zone for 2-lane roads.
- Working knowledge of standard road maintenance, construction procedures, Work Zone Safety ,and Workplace safety policies.
- Experience in 2+ pieces: asphalt distributor, asphalt mixer, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, ditching machine, force feed loader, front end loader, lube truck, asphalt maintainer, post driver, skid steer, street sweeper, tandem dump truck, tractor “A” boom mower, and truck w/aerial device.
- Experience in 1+ area: pipe installation, installation of erosion control devices, snow and ice removal, ditch maintenance, or asphalt patching.
- Experience in snow and ice removal operations.
- Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.
- A Class A Commercial Driver’s License with N endorsement within 360 days of hire. (Note: we offer on-the-job training to help you get this!)
- Good eyesight (glasses are ok).
- Fitness to bend, walk, and stand on uneven terrain.
- Strength to safely and repeatedly lift and carry 80 pounds.
- Safety toe shoes.
- In your work you will encounter extreme conditions such as ice, snow, dust, extreme heat and cold, high volumes of traffic, and heavy construction equipment.
- You will be subject to emergency call backs, scheduled night work, and out of town travel during adverse weather or other extreme circumstances.
- A pre-employment drug test is required, and we will conduct a background check of the past 2 years from your previous employers about controlled substance and alcohol testing.
- You will need to obtain an inmate card, meaning you will have to undergo a criminal history check, complete necessary training and orientation, and be 21+ years of age.
- High school/GED diploma, and
- 3+ years of relevant experience; or
- An equivalent combination of education and experience.
