Full-Time Training Specialist III – Division of Youth Services

Job Description

DESCRIPTION OF JOB:
We are seeking an exceptional individual to serve as a Youth Services Training Specialist; a position that will work with various stakeholders, subject matter exerts and the training team to create and deliver innovative training solutions that are designed to further organizational efforts align with the Division’s Colorado Model.  Our ideal candidate brings the following attributes to the position: understands adult learning theory and best practices in training, able to work well in team settings, able lead projects to a successful completion, able to consistently meet deadlines and is able to use critical thinking skills to problem solve through challenges.

Specific Duties Include:

We are seeking an exceptional individual to serve as a Youth Services Training Specialist; a position that will work with various stakeholders, subject matter exerts and the training team to create and deliver innovative training solutions that are designed to further organizational efforts align with the Division’s Colorado Model.  Our ideal candidate brings the following attributes to the position: understands adult learning theory and best practices in training, able to work well in team settings, able lead projects to a successful completion, able to consistently meet deadlines and is able to use critical thinking skills to problem solve through challenges.
The position exists to design curriculum, conduct skill development coordination and perform direct training activities to all staff of the Division of Youth Services as well as external stakeholders to ensure the organization’s vision, mission and promote the goals of the Colorado Model.  This position will determine and utilize differing methods such as online, ILT and/or web-based learning to deliver high quality training. This position’s duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Utilizing their expertise in adult learning theory, training delivery concepts, automated training technologies and curriculum development, the position develops, writes, and implements standardized training programs/curricula to teach employees skills related to effectively working with youth who’ve committed sexual offenses, trauma informed/responsive care, effective milieu management interventions, cognitive behavioral approaches, CPR/SFA, policies, crisis prevention and interventions techniques to include non-escalation and de-escalation , and new employee training.  The position will maintain lines of communication with facilities, other organizations, client managers, and direct care workers to ensure the stakeholder’s needs are being addressed.

 

  • Train DYS staff in the following areas: 1. Informed Supervision using Sex Offender Management Board standards, 2. Cognitive behavioral interventions, 3. CPR/SFA and safety courses, 4. Policies designed to reduce liability and increase the safety of youth and staff, 5. Protective Supports and Interventions certification to include effective non-escalation, de-escalation and crisis intervention/prevention strategies, 6. Effective behavior and milieu management, 5. Sanctuary/trauma informed care model and 7. Other topic areas that support the organizational goals and values.

 

  • Provide information, support, and guidance to DYS leadership and the Division as a whole in the training areas of milieu management, cognitive behavioral interventions, CPR/SFA, supervisory responsibility, policy, verbal de-escalation strategies, and new employee training.  Provide recommendations on programs that increase positive outcome measurements as it relates to the Division’s Colorado Model goals, mission statement, and Five Key Strategies.  Provide technical assistance and guidance to ensure increased success of youth and reduction in recidivism while maintaining a safe environment.

 

  • Assist the Director of Staff Development in the collection and tracking of data to inform the decision making process that help to further align with the mission, vision and the Colorado Model goals.

 

  • Help to create and interpret policy/procedures that will either be used to guide or be addressed through training services.

 

Minimum Qualifications

Educational Requirements
High school diploma or General Education Diploma, (GED).

     AND

Work Experience
Three (3) years of full-time corrections-related work experience.  Anything less than 40 hours per week is considered part-time experience. Credit is given for part-time work but is calculated by prorating the qualifying experience.
And
Needs to have a strong understanding of, not only how to effective train, but also how the information directly relates to staff who are responsible for the supervision and safety of the youth in our care especially those who’ve committed sexual offenses. The position needs to have at least two (2) years experience working with juveniles who have committed sexual offenses.  The position is required to train on this topic area immediately within our new employee program to help ensure organizational adherence to the requirements outlined in the Sex Offender Management Board standards.  As the primary trainer/expert, responsible to assist in the evaluation of the standards and potential concerns/questions.

Substitution:  Professional work experience developing and implementing training courses to include writing lesson plans may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the bachelor’s degree.  A master’s or doctorate degree in Human Services, Psychology, Social Work, Adult Learning, or a closely related field from an accredited college or university may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree and one or two years of general experience respectively.  (30 semester hours equals 12 months full-time work experience.)

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in organizational development, education, adult learning, psychology, sociology, social work, or closely related field. Please include transcripts as part of your application packet.

And

Experience:

  • Two (2) years of experience working with youth and developing and delivering training programs.
  • 2 years’ experience providing formal training.
  • 2 years’ experience in facilitating a formal crisis prevention and intervention program/training
  • Master’s degree in Human Services, Psychology, Social Work, Adult Learning, or a closely related field.
  • Experience reviewing policies and writing trainings to those policies.

And

Certification:

  • Must either have or be able to certify as an ASHI FA/CPR Instructor trainer
  • Must either have or be able to certify as an Protective Supports and Intervention Instructor which is the organizations crisis prevention and intervention program

Essential Competencies: Training/Instructing; Analytical/reasoning/critical thinking skills; learning strategies; oral communication; written communication; interpersonal skills; thinking creatively; Understanding of DYC Safety Program.

Special Qualification:  
The person hired into this position must be physically able to certify as an instructor in DYS Crisis Prevention and Intervention program and as an ASHI First Aid/CPR instructor during probation.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid State of Colorado drivers license
  • Must have no felony convictions and no violent history
  • Must pass a drug screen

  • Continued employment is contingent upon successful completion of the DYS Pre-service Training Academy, Field Training Program (FTO) and mandatory annual training in all subject areas.
