THE RECONSIDERATION PERIOD FOR THIS RECRUITMENT IS THREE (3) BUSINESS DAYS  
The State Highway Administration’s (SHA) Office of Traffic and Safety (OOTS) is currently recruiting for a Traffic Engineer (Transportation Engineer III) in Anne Arundel County. This position is open to anyone who meets the minimum and selective qualifications listed below.  This is a position specific recruitment. The resulting list of eligible candidates will be used to fill this vacancy only. You will need to reapply for any future recruitment conducted for this job classification.

Nature of Work: This position is in the Traffic Engineering Design Division (TEDD) and serves as a traffic control device (TCD) Design Engineer. This position reports to the Team Leader of their TCD design team and is responsible for the project management, design, and coordination of engineering designs for TCD’s statewide, as well as overseeing the TCD design of design consultants. This position is accountable for the management and sound engineering of multiple projects, both generated within TEDD and by external SHA offices (e.g., District Offices, Office of Structures, Office of Highway Development). This position is performed in an office setting and in the field, requiring safety equipment per SHA policy, when working in the field.  The position will also assist the Team Leader to manage programs ranging from asset management, signing, traffic signal UPS and/or LED roadway lighting.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
Education: Possession of a bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited college or university.

Experience: Two (2) years of experience in professional engineering.

Selective Qualifications: One (1) year of the required experience must have involved traffic engineering.

This statement contains a selective qualification, which is more focused in scope than the minimum qualifications for this classification.  Selective qualifications are utilized when the position requires specific or additional bona fide occupational qualifications (i.e., knowledge, skill or abilities).  

Preferred Qualifications:
The ideal candidate should have experience in one or more of the following: 

  • Ability to learn and conduct design and review of traffic control device (TCD) plans using the principles of engineering.
  • Effective multi-tasking skills.
  • Ability to exercise and initiate judgment.
  • Ability to interpret and conform to laws, rules, regulations, and policies.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Experience and knowledge of professional transportation engineering principles, practices, and methods.
  • Skilled in using computer applications suitable to engineering projects.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and possess good customer service skills.
  • Ability and willingness to progress toward more complex work as time in the position increases.

Notes:
1.  Additional work experience in professional engineering, or in technical engineering at the journey level or above, may be substituted on a year for year basis for the required education.
2.  Possession of a master’s degree in engineering may be substituted for one year of the required experience.
3.  Persons currently registered as Professional Engineers in the State of Maryland, or in a state with comparable requirements, are considered to have met the education requirements.

Licenses & Certifications

Candidates must possess a driver’s license valid in the state of Maryland.
