Brescia University College campus is situated on the traditional lands of the Anishinaabeg, Haundenosaunee, Lūnaapéewak and Chonnonton Nations. Brescia is currently seeking an experienced and dynamic individual to fill a position as:

 TEAM LEAD, STUDENT ENGAGEMENT AND DEVELOPMENT

(Temporary Full-time Contract – June 2023 – December 2024)
Salary Grade 7 – $32.66 per hour

The Student Life Centre (SLC) provides a broad portfolio of student engagement programs, services, and initiatives that support and enhance the student experience at Brescia, particularly: orientation & transition, career development & education, mental health & wellbeing, experiential learning, and leadership & involvement.

Working with the Director, Student Experience, this job is responsible for providing leadership and strategy for services that facilitate positive student experience, through effective transition, development, engagement, and student success.

The Team Lead, Student Engagement and Development role is responsible for the development, implementation and evaluation of initiatives that address diverse student needs and support student development and engagement at Brescia. Key responsibilities of the Team Lead include: Career Advising appointments; Career Development programs and projects (e.g., Professional Mentoring Program, Career Peers, BOLD Works-Work Study Program); New Student Experience (Orientation Programming, Transition Support Program); Learning Skills Supports and Services, Experiential Learning (Work Integrated Learning Experiences, e.g., The Francolini Leadership Experience and the MOS Internship Program); Annual Student Leader Recognition Event; Co-Curricular Record; and Student Communications (marketing, promotions, social media).

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Career Development & Experiential Learning Support

  • Provide support, guidance, advising and/or coaching to students as it pertains to career and employment objectives.
  • Promote student development, success, retention, and encourage career achievement.
  • Conduct coaching and advising sessions regarding career exploration and decision making, further education, resume/cover letter writing, networking/hidden job market, professional skills development, while encouraging career achievement.
  • Regularly engage in current research, trends and best practices related to the field of career development to properly advise students.
  • Recruit, screen and prepare students for engagement in experiential learning opportunities, monitoring progress and assessing learning outcomes related to their engagement.
  • Liaise with faculty to ensure suitable matches between students and community partners.
  • Create and implement Letters of Agreements between community partners and Brescia University College to ensure the mutual agreement and understanding of the scope of services and responsibilities of the community partner, as well as the responsibilities of the student, terms of employment, termination stipulations, insurance, and other regulatory sections.

New Student Experience & Transition

  • Design and deliver robust orientation and transition initiatives to address the multifaceted needs of Brescia’s unique incoming student demographic (residence, off-campus, transfer, mature, international, preliminary year). This includes, but not limited to coordinating Brescia’s Orientation Week and Soph Peer Mentoring program, as they pertain to yearlong new student transition.
  • Collaborate with internal partners to develop, implement, and coordinate transitional support services pre- and post- arrival of new and incoming students.
  • Establish and implement a communication plan to promote program participation.
  • Participate on various committees acting as a resource person for other staff and student leaders regarding best practices and current research on design and delivery of transition programs.
  • Maintain files, record keeping, inventory of products, partners, and supplies.

Learning Skills Support & Services

  • Lead the Learning Skills Working Group, which includes representation from Academic Advising, the Writing Centre, the ALT Centre, Library Services, and the Registrar’s Office, to ensure strategic development of academic services and is in alignment with Brescia’s strategic plan.
  • Management of this portfolio will ensure that academic supports are developed in the appropriate stages as to directly align with Brescia’s goal of launching an Academic Learning Support Hub.

Student Life Centre Operations & Managerial Duties

  • Supervise SLC student staff and student leaders (approximately 85) including the Orientation Coordinator (Head Soph), Programming Assistants, Orientation Leaders (Sophs), Career Peers, Professional Mentoring Program Mentees, and work study students
  • Manage both the initial onboarding and continued training of all student staff and student leaders hired within the portfolios of the Student Life Centre.
  • Manage assigned tasks/portfolios, as well as coaching and development for performance management.
  • Develop and implement strategies to build and retain student leaders and volunteers.
  • Create, implement, and maintain policies and procedures related to the management of programs and services.
  • Actively participate on campus and off-campus / industry / community committees responsible for initiatives that support student-relevant issues.
  • Provide detailed and accurate budgetary plans with ongoing monitoring of expenses for programs and initiatives under portfolio

    Student Support & Intervention

  • Support in maintaining and reviewing Early Alert (Care Program) system to: support Brescia community in identifying students or situations of concern; provide coordinated, accessible, sustainable, and practical support for students when needed.
  • As a resource to students in personal or academic crisis, make appropriate referrals to support services at Western (Psychological Services, Student Health Services); Brescia (Academic Advising, Student Wellness Educator, Financial Aid, Registrar’s Office, Residence Life, Campus Ministry); or in London.

REQUIREMENTS OF THE ROLE INCLUDE:

  • Undergraduate degree
  • Minimum of three years experience in Student Affairs or Education
  • Experience in leading and advising students
  • Experience in developing strategic partnerships with diverse stakeholders
  • Completion of the Safe Talk Suicide Prevention Course would be an asset.
  • Strong listening and interpersonal skills a must.
