SALARY: $66,742.00 – $130,017.00 Annually

INTRODUCTION:
Prince William County, the second largest jurisdiction in Virginia, is transitioning to an innovative environmental and energy sustainability leader in the DC metropolitan area. As one of the fastest growing communities in Virginia, Prince William County is faced with managing a high growth rate while addressing the need to be environmentally and energy conscious. As part of the Washington Metro Council of Governments, Prince William County has endorsed several key energy goals:
1. Endorse MWCOG climate mitigation goal (50% greenhouse gas emissions reductions below 2005)
2. Endorse MWCOG climate resiliency goals (become a climate ready region to make progress to be a climate resilient region by 2030)
The Board also directed the following goal be incorporated in the Comprehensive Plan:
1. 100% of PWC electricity to be from renewable sources by 2030 and for PWC Government to be 100% carbon neutral by 2050
With leadership that supports and drives change, the Environmental and Energy Sustainability Officer will help to create Prince William County’s first Environmental and Energy Sustainability Plan. Working with two new Board-appointed groups, the Environmental and Energy Sustainability Commission and the Joint Environmental Task Force, this position will engage stakeholders to create the path forward to addressing the above goals as well as a creating a policy document with a holistic vision for sustainable County government operations and facilities as well as helping to motivate change throughout the entire community.

This position will have a full-time administrative support professional and a private consulting contractor to help complete the Environment and Energy Master Plan.

ABOUT THIS ROLE:
Personnel in this position will:
• Engage stakeholders
• Manage a consulting contract
• Draft and/or edit policy documents
• Facilitate discussions
• Mediate stakeholder discussions
• Generate creative solutions to complex problems
• Research and become conversant in a variety of technical topics, as necessary
• Understand complex technical issues
• Act as staff liaison to two Board-appointed groups (commission & task force)
• Navigate highly political situations

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
• Degree in compatible field of study (Planning, Environment, Energy, Community Engagement, Public Administration, etc.).
• Three or more years of demonstrable work related to community engagement and/or environment, energy, or sustainability.
• Must possess a valid driver’s license.
• Must pass DMV record check.
