Full-Time Survey Engineering Specialist II
Job Description
- Assist engineers in the implementation and administration of roadway and structure construction projects awarded to private contractors.
- Serve as our Survey Party Chief providing surveying and drone services to all District II units.
- Conduct preliminary field surveys including topographical survey, digital terrain modeling, utility location, and boundary stakeouts.
- Process raw data files for importing into GeoPak.
- Perform highway construction stakeout duties including bluetop stakeout, drainage stakeout, slope staking, finish pavement grades, curb & gutter stakeout, monolithic island layout, structure layout and proposed right of way monuments, and applicable easements.
- Calculate and set up road templates using data collectors.
- Calculate and compute earthwork quantities by average end method and Digital Terrain Modeling (DTM).
- Perform GPS control surveys using Trimble equipment.
- Maintain Part 107 Drone Pilot Licensure.
- Provide engineers drone photograph, video, and data.
- Work proficiently in Drone Deploy and Content Capture to process data.
- Review and check work performed by technicians, private engineering firms, and other NCDOT units.
- Review roadway and structure plans by private engineering firms for coordinate geometry accuracy, check typical sections, and R/W offsets.
- Schedule and prioritize workload with minimal supervision.
- Resolve design issues by determining possible solutions and consulting with Engineers.
- Experience with route locations and other survey policies and procedures.
- Experience managing/leading survey crews in daily activities.
- Working knowledge of CADD, MicroStation, and GeoPak, including editing the work of others.
- Experience planning and reviewing survey work performed by others.
- Demonstrated communications skills to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with co-workers, management, contractors and public to express complex technical and/or program concepts and related facts in a clear, concise, and organized manner.
- Ability to establish and maintain communication between technicians, engineers, contractors, and the public.
- Ability to work safely in an outside environment with exposure to hazards on construction sites including heights, highway traffic, and traversing rough terrain in evaluating highway construction.
- Fitness to perform moderate physical activity, including walking, climbing, balancing, kneeling, and standing.
- Strength to lift 50 pounds.
- You hold a safety philosophy and program to all operations.
- Safety toe shoes.
- Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.
- You may be required to work at night and on weekends when needed.
- Associate’s degree in Engineering Technology, Survey Technology, or a related field, and
- 7+ years of progressive technician experience; or
- An equivalent combination of education and experience.
