If you answered yes to any of these questions, New America’s Open Technology Institute (OTI) is interested in hearing from you.
OTI seeks an enthusiastic, motivated undergraduate or graduate student (or an individual with similar experience) for a full-time communications internship for Summer 2022. You should have a passion for public policy and an interest in developing a career in communications.
OTI works at the intersection of technology and policy to ensure that every community has equitable access to digital technology and its benefits. OTI’s staff includes noted experts on an array of issues who work closely with a diverse team of policy analysts, technologists, and associates. OTI is housed within New America, a nonprofit, nonpartisan public policy institute that invests in new thinkers and new ideas to address the next generation of challenges facing the United States. OTI’s work covers a range of internet policy issues, including but not limited to net neutrality, broadband access and adoption, wireless broadband and spectrum, cybersecurity, encryption, government surveillance, internet governance, privacy, and civil liberties.
About the internship:
OTI is looking for a communications intern to work full-time with our in-house communications team. You will support OTI’s efforts to build public discussion around our issues by assisting with content creation, social media, events, editing, media relations, rapid response, and more. You will report to the communications manager.
At the time of this posting, all New America staff are working remotely, and New America is continuing to evaluate when, and under what circumstances, staff will return to working in the Washington, DC office. Regardless of any changes to the remote work policy, all internships will be able to be completed remotely.
Tasks and Responsibilities:
- Support OTI’s editorial efforts – copyediting, layout, and publishing;
- Draft tweets and support planning for the OTI Twitter account;
- Update OTI’s press lists;
- Track and archive OTI press/media hits;
- Help keep OTI’s website current, uploading content and fixing any issues;
- Support OTI events through live tweeting and hands-on assistance;
- Assist with OTI’s monthly newsletter by summarizing recent work;
You will also have the opportunity to author or co-author blog posts, articles, press releases or press pitches, as well as the chance to attend educational events.
Required Qualifications:
- Career interest in communications;
- Experience in or an enthusiastic willingness to learn about technology and public policy;
- A self-starter with a positive attitude who can take on projects with minimal supervision;
- Strong written and verbal communications skills;
- Strong organizational skills, and keen attention to detail;
- Available to work 40 hours a week.
Additional Skills (a plus, but not required):
- Experience managing an organization’s Twitter account;
- Interest or experience in social media and/or website analytics;
- Familiarity with Salesforce;
- Knowledge of Adobe InDesign & Photoshop.
