Job Description Summary
This is a part time, on-call position. Substitute Teachers in partnership with other staff are responsible for the management of their group. They will assist in the social development and foster the health and safety of children participating in Friendly House’s Children’s Programs. Substitute Teachers will cover planned absences and may at times be called for last-minute coverage for unplanned absences. This position requires flexibility, being an initiative-taking contributor in a busy classroom, and a commitment to educational excellence.
Essential Functions
· Demonstrate the ability to comprehend and comply with the Oregon Rules for Certified Childcare Centers.
· Provide a safe and healthy environment for children enrolled in Children’s Programs.
· Show good judgement as evidenced by responsible behavior that ensures the children’s health and safety.
· Recognize and respect the uniqueness and potential of all children, their families, and their cultures.
· Maintain responsibility for a group of up to 15 children; share responsibility for groups of up to 20 children with another Children’s Program staff member.
· Follow policies and procedures to identify each child for whom they are responsible, and relate to them with courtesy, respect, acceptance, and patience.
· Constantly maintain appropriate staff to student ratios (1:15 or less).
· Use and model appropriate positive language and emotional skills for children.
· Report suspected abuse, neglect, and exploitation in accordance with Oregon law.
· Have and maintain the required training and experience for the After School Teacher position, including meeting the Oregon Department of Early Learning and Care’s (15 hours per year) requirements.
Other Duties
· Share responsibility for daily classroom setup and cleanup with teaching staff.
· Interact with staff and other adults in a positive and respectful manner.
· Check in with the classroom teacher when entering a classroom to provide breaks and ensure continuity of expectation while the teacher leaves the classroom.
· Help prepare and set up snacks and meals when required.
· Ensure classroom spaces and storage areas are kept hazard free, clean, and organized.
· Routinely clean, sanitize, and disinfect surfaces and materials that are frequently touched.
· Track essential paperwork and information daily.
· Immediately notify the Children’s Program Director of any incidents, accidents, or other health and safety hazards, by following Children’s Programs procedures and policies.
· Other duties as needed for success of the program.
Requirements
Qualifications
· Be at least 18 years of age.
· At least 20 semester hours or 30 quarter hours of training at a college/university in elementary education, child development, physical education, recreation, special education, or early childhood education (K-3), or one-year successful, fulltime experience in a certified day-care center or comparable group childcare program caring for school-age children.
· Obtain an Oregon Child Care Food Handler Card within 60 days of employment.
· Current first aid and pediatric CPR training certificate within 60 days of employment
· Current enrollment in CCLD’s Central Background Registry (CBR)
· Completion of a background check with ORCHARDS (BCU).
· Must be authorized to work in the United States
