The Cary Arts Center is the downtown hub of arts activity for Cary. We are seeking a Studio Arts Education Specialist who will be a member of the Arts Education Program team, and will play a major role in planning and implementing a robust studio art education program within our facilities and out in the greater community. The studio arts program includes ceramics, metals, glass, wood, and textiles. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Operations & Program Supervisor – Arts Education. Supervision is exercised over part-time temporary employees.
Typical Tasks
- Plans, programs, and implements a comprehensive studio arts program for all ages and abilities that includes classes, camps, workshops, special activities, and events located at the Cary Arts Center, multiple offsite locations such as community centers, Town festivals, and areas out in the community; and the future Downtown Cary Park;
- Collaborates with the Visual and Performing Arts Education Specialists to create unique opportunities for our community to participate in the arts that are a collective of two or all three programming areas;
- Recruits, orients, supervises, and conducts performance reviews for the studio art instructors, and other temporary and seasonal staff;
- Seeks partnerships and avenues to connect the studio arts program to the broader community;
- Promotes safety in all studio spaces through trainings, evaluations, and up-to-date protocols designed for tools, equipment, and hazardous materials, and their uses.
- Oversees maintenance of all specialized equipment used in the program;
- Works with staff to ensure that the processes for purchasing, storing, and distributing studio art tools and supplies are comprehensive, effective, and efficient; manages the point-of-sale inventory for studio arts programs;
- Manages open studios in ceramics, metals, glass, and woodworking;
- Prepares and submits the studio arts program’s budget request; tracks expenditures and alerts supervisor of unexpected expenditures and account balances; manages procurement card processes for studio arts staff;
- Manages payroll for the studio art instructors and temp staff;
- Oversees accessibility and inclusion for the studio arts programs; creates individual learning plans and modifications as needed; communicates any modifications with the instructors; communicates medical information and procedures to staff and instructors to ensure the safety of the students;
- Assists in planning and/or working receptions, festivals, and special Town events onsite and at off-site locations;
- Handles special projects; performs research and generates reports that may be technical in nature as needed and requested;
- Prepares and reviews a variety of data for accuracy and completeness such as the program guides and marketing materials; works with appropriate persons to create and utilize social media for marketing;
- Serves as liaison with assigned cultural organizations;
- Operates standard office equipment, including use of personal computer and related software;
- Performs other job-related tasks as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Considerable knowledge in the studio arts, especially ceramics; considerable knowledge of arts education best practices; general knowledge of how cultural programs fit into the overall service of municipal government; general knowledge and understanding of child development; general knowledge and understanding of recreational programming; extensive knowledge of studio arts equipment, tools, supplies and materials; general knowledge of first aid practices and techniques; skilled in some aspect of studio arts; ability to organize a variety of classes for all ages and abilities; ability to adhere to program standards, policies, and regulations and to enforce appropriate guidelines and discipline; ability to express directions clearly and to deal tactfully with staff and the public; ability to operate and maintain the tools and equipment associated with areas of responsibility; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships; ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously; ability to manage complex projects in a timely manner and meet deadlines; ability to effectively market programs; ability to interact effectively with students of all ages including caregivers of younger students; ability to communicate effectively both orally and written; ability to perform considerable walking, climbing, bending, and lifting moderately heavy items (25lbs); ability to stand for long periods of time; ability to talk and hear to communicate with other employees, program participants, the public, and others and to perform the tasks listed above; ability to read and write handwritten and typewritten materials and view a computer.
