Job Description
- Provide the independent application of professional techniques & standards in the design & review of moderate to complex plans & specifications for metal poles and foundations used to support traffic signal/ITS equipment components.
- Help manage engineering plans, specifications, and estimates for the successful application, installation, and maintenance of all traffic signals, central computer-based signal systems and Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) technologies installed on the State highway system.
- Help establish policy, procedures, and standards of work to ensure conformance with Federal guidelines and NC General Statutes.
- Considerable knowledge and understanding of the concepts, practices, and theories used in structural engineering and the ability to use them in practice.
- Experience planning, developing, scheduling, tracking, and completing projects independently or with limited supervision.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the skill to prepare and present reports clearly, concisely, and organized for moderately-complex engineering projects.
- Computer skills using Microsoft Office, CADD software, and structural Engineering packages.
- Demonstrated ability to make recommendations and decisions on non-routine engineering/program matters or other areas requiring technical engineering expertise.
- Geotechnical experience.
- The ability to perform moderate to complex technical analyses and answer questions relating to the design of metal strain or cantilever poles & foundations.
- Knowledge of AASHTO Standard Specifications for Structural Supports for Highway Signs, Luminaires & Traffic Signals; analysis/modeling software & programs for metal pole designs/loadings & geotech reactions that affect design of concrete foundations; NCDOT Standard Specifications for Roads & Structure & Traffic Signal Project Special Provisions.
- Ability to traverse rough terrain on roadside environment.
- A valid Class C Driver’s License & ability to operate a motor vehicle for travel statewide including some overnight travel.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word & Excel, Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices(MUTCD) with good knowledge of Part IV – Signals.
- CADD skills, preferably Microstation.
- General knowledge of traffic signal materials & equipment as well as construction & maintenance methods.
- We may require registration as a professional engineer by the NC Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
- Bachelors Degree in engineering, and
- 3+ years of relevant experience; or
- An equivalent combination of education and experience.
