The HIV Vaccine Trials Network (HVTN) is the world’s largest publicly funded multi-disciplinary international collaboration facilitating the development of vaccines and antibodies to prevent HIV/AIDS. The HVTN Statistical and Data Management Center (SDMC) provides statistical and bioinformatics leadership in protocol design and data management/analysis for vaccine clinical trials. In addition, SDMC faculty and staff lead and contribute to analyses related to the development and implementation of innovative statistical and bioinformatics approaches to improve the scientific understanding of immunology, vaccinology, HIV biology, and how these components influence HIV vaccine candidates. The HVTN has also expanded the scope of infectious disease work to include the intersecting pandemic of TB as well as COVID-19.
The HVTN SDMC Laboratory Sciences group is seeking a Statistical Programmer II to support operations related to laboratory assay data generated from HIV, COVID-19 and TB vaccine clinical trials and projects in collaboration with statisticians and laboratory investigators.
The Lab Sciences Statistical Programmer II under general supervision, will apply knowledge of programming and lab assay data to write efficient, re-usable, and easily maintainable code that accesses, analyzes and reports assay data descriptives and analyses. The incumbent primarily uses R or Python; additional software languages can be used as needed. Core to the role is the ability to communicate effectively, work collaboratively with colleagues and be responsive to the needs of both internal and external customers within an environment of cooperation and respect. The Lab Sciences Statistical Programmer II shows independence in management of workload and production of quality output, as well as technical expertise that contributes to the programmatic infrastructure of the SDMC.

Responsibilities
- Gather and document requirements for developing or modifying existing programs and systems
- Develop scripts for wrangling / data transformation and standardizing assay datasets
- Generate, document, and maintain assay datasets
- Create ad hoc, standard and study-specific reports (e.g. Assay QC)
- Test and de-bug programs and organize and maintain version control on production programs and scripts
- Design and develop new work instructions (WIs) and/or work practice guidelines (WPGs) and contribute to standard operation procedures (SOPs).
- May coordinate efforts to standardize procedures or processes within BBE.
- Develop and maintain automation of routine analysis data and reporting tasks
- Contribute to good programming practices, and cross-group programming initiatives and code libraries
- Work with clinical programmers, labs, statisticians, and other statistical programmers to resolve data quality, processing, and analysis issues
Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a scientific, technical, or health-related field
- At least two years of experience as R or Python programmer on PC/Unix platform
- Preferred experience programming in support of clinical trials, statistical programming in a clinical research setting or other health research programming support; experience using version control tools (e.g. git)
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively as a member of several project teams
- Demonstrated ability to multi-task and appropriately prioritize work assignments
Preferred:
- Advanced R or Python programming skills
- Strong reporting and R package development abilities
- Ability to use Python or other scripting languages (such as Perl) for text manipulation and automated job control
- Knowledge of immunology laboratory methods (e.g. immunoassays, flow cytometry) and experience with clinical trial operations and assay or biological data.
The annual base salary range for this position is from $81,979 to $122,969, and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.
