Full-Time Staff Attorney – Immigration Law Unit (Afghan Refugee Project)

GBLS seeks a full-time staff attorney for a permanent position, the first eighteen months of which will be in our Immigration Unit (IU) as part of the Afghan Refugee Project (After the first year, the attorney may be transferred to other work at GBLS, based on need at that time.).
The Afghan Refugee Project is dedicated to providing vital immigration assistance to Afghan asylum seekers living in Massachusetts. The staff attorney will provide immigration legal aid to recently arrived Afghan nationals, focusing primarily on the preparation of asylum claims before the Boston Asylum Office. Other relief may be needed on a case-by-case basis, including, but not limited to, Special Immigrant Juvenile Status, VAWA relief, U/T visas, and representation before Boston Immigration Court and appellate courts. The staff attorney will also be expected to attend monthly meetings of the larger Afghan Refugee Project coalition, comprised of Massachusetts Legal Assistance Coalition (MLAC) and several legal aid organizations throughout the state.
Qualifications include up to five years of legal experience. Experience in immigration law and working with immigrant clients is strongly preferred. Excellent written and oral communication skills are required. Admission, or pending admission, to the Massachusetts or other state bar is required.
Salary is based on a union scale, with a starting annual salary range between $60,000 and $66,000 depending on experience. Potential salary increase in the future will be determined by the Collective Bargaining Agreement. GBLS offers a generous benefits package and paid time off policy. A hybrid work schedule is possible.
