The Academic Achievement Center (AAC) is the largest hub of student academic support services at Bridgewater State University. The AAC provides Learning Assistance support to undergraduate students. Within Learning Assistance there are six main areas: Academic Coaching, Accounting and Finance Lab, Math Services, Tutoring Central, Second Language Services, and the Writing Studio. The AAC also houses Academic Advising, Student Accessibility Services, Transfer Services, and Testing Services. All areas within the AAC are dedicated to student success and retention, as well as equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Position Summary:

The Staff Assistant Academic Advisor supports all academic advising initiatives in the Academic Achievement Center to help ensure the delivery of quality academic advising services in an inclusive, equity-minded manner. The Staff Assistant cultivates relationships with students to help them identify viable academic goals and degree plans through clear communication of academic policies and procedures and use of advising technologies. The Staff Assistant will utilize proactive, holistic, and relationship-based advising skills to engage with and support students and will collaborate with Director and Academic Advising team to continually improve advising services and programming.

The AAC Academic Advising team supports approximately 25% of BSU undergraduate students and is one of five departments located within the Academic Achievement Center (AAC). Other AAC departments include: Learning Assistance, Student Accessibility Services, Testing Services, and Transfer Services. We dedicate each day to student success and retention, as well as equity, diversity, and inclusion.

This is an exempt, APA unit position and is subject to the terms of that union agreement.

Essential Duties:

• Serve as an academic advisor supporting a caseload that may include students with Undecided majors, first year students, students on academic probation, and those readmitted to the institution including transfer students
• Assist each assigned students with transition to college, interpretation of degree requirements and academic planning for degree completion, major and program exploration, and understanding university policies, procedures, and important dates; provide ongoing academic advising through email and phone communication, one to one appointments, and group programming; and make appropriate and timely referrals to support resources and co-curricular engagement opportunities on campus
• Assist in the coordination and facilitation of individual and group advising programming, new student orientation advising and registration programing, and new advisor training.
• Provide academic advising and conduct exit interviews for students seeking withdrawal from courses and/or the university as needed
• Actively participate in academic advising staff meetings and assist with overall program planning and delivery
• Cultivate positive working relationships with AAC colleagues as well as departmental faculty as advising liaison to specific departments or college(s)
• Communicate and collaborate with all faculty and staff across campus to provide wraparound service and support to students
• Contribute to programming which upholds the mission and goals of the Academic Achievement Center and the university
• Utilize campus technologies including Blackboard, Banner, InfoBear, DegreeWorks, and Accudemia
• Contribute to university initiatives that impact student retention, success, and diversity and inclusion
• Perform other job tasks as assigned

Required Qualifications:

• Minimum requirement of Master’s degree in higher education, student personnel, counseling, or other related field.
• Experience and ability to work with people from diverse racial, ethnic, socioeconomic backgrounds and across all identities and demographics.
• One to 3 years of related experience especially in the areas of academic advising, academic support services, and/or college instruction.
• Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
• Experience and willingness to demonstrate flexibility to successfully juggle many tasks and prioritize.
• Knowledge of higher education principles, practices, and procedures.
• Ability to exercise sound judgment and serve as student advocate to coordinate additional services as needed.
• Ability to effectively use technological solutions in the delivery of academic advising services.
• Demonstrated ability to work in stressful situations, sensitivity to human concerns, patience, and professional integrity.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with technology in the delivery of academic advising services including degree auditing systems (DegreeWorks) and student information systems (InfoBear).
