Job Description
We are seeking a talented Software Engineer to join our Protein Function development team at EMBL-EBI. In this role, you’ll drive the software design and development for two world-class scientific resources: GlyGen, a leading platform in GlycoScience, and UniProt, one of the most prominent services in the field of biology and biomedicine. This is an exciting role that will help develop world’s leading scientific resources, collaborating with international teams across Europe and the US. You will be based in a dynamic, multidisciplinary environment, working alongside excellent software engineers, bioinformaticians and scientists to advance these critical resources.
Your role
In your role as a software engineer, your main responsibility will be architecting and developing robust software modules and scalable workflows for efficient data exchange, integration and management of the ever-growing volume of scientific information. You will serve as the technical liaison, facilitating communication between these resources.
The EBI is a world-leading bioinformatics centre providing biological data to the scientific community, with expertise in data storage, analysis and representation. The UniProt team provides a central resource on protein information and a solid set of services and computational analysis of protein data.
UniProt is produced by the UniProt Consortium – a collaboration between the EBI, the Protein Information Resource (PIR) and the Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics (SIB).
You have
- Good communication skills
- English language skills are essential
- Ideally, you have already gained experience in a multilingual working environment
- Enjoy working in an international environment
- A degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Life Sciences or a related discipline
- At least 2 years professional software development experience in Java
- Experience in Java programming
- Familiar with standard development tools (continuous integration e.g. Jenkins, build management e.g. Maven, and source code management systems e.g. GIT, etc).
- Understanding of good coding practices and approaches (OOP, IoC, automated testing, clean code principles, code review)
- Familiarity with SQL and relational database design principles, Unix shell scripting
- Ability to work as part of a team of people with a range of skills and a diversity of backgrounds

- Experience developing REST applications with containerisation/cloud deployment.
