Full-Time Software Development Team Lead

careers@verto.ca – Posted by careers@verto.ca Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Job Description

Imagine knowing the work you do is changing the face of the healthcare system in Canada. That’s what we do every day at Verto Health, create technology solutions that facilitate access to quality healthcare regardless of geographic location.

Who we are

Verto Health’s Digital Twin platform supports virtual care, streamlines data collection, allows for coordination between healthcare facilities, and acts as a patient engagement hub. Founded in 2017, our goal is to bring Canadian Healthtech to the global stage. Our mission is to build software that delivers improved patient outcomes and experience.

In September 2020, we partnered with McMaster HealthLabs (MHL) to use our technology to facilitate a pilot project to test thousands of travellers a day arriving in Canada for COVID-19. As a result of this successful pilot, and renewed commitment from Air Canada and the GTAA, we’re excited to respond to the demand for well-managed, secure, rapid testing. Read more about the pilot project here.

We are growing our team so we can expand our impact. We are hiring people who share our passion for improving care access, cost and quality using technology.

Who we need

Reporting to the Director, Engineering, we are searching for a Software Development Team Lead to join and lead an Agile group of 4-5 junior Developers and co-op students. You will mentor the team and be hands on, working on solutions that are radically transforming how healthcare is delivered through our digital twin platform. One of the first projects you will work on is expanding the solutions being used to provide essential technology for a large-scale response to the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s an exciting opportunity for a senior developer with people-management potential who’s plateaued and looking for a new challenge at a place to bring their lessons learned and technical expertise.

We are solving technology problems for the Canadian healthcare industry and doing so at a speed that is lightning fast. What other companies take months to do, we accomplish in weeks. All of this comes together to create an incredible opportunity for significant innovation and rewarding work.

What’s in it for you

Exposure. We hold weekly Architecture Review Board meetings (ARB), where the passion, innovation, and dedication of every member can be heard. ARB is a place where everyone can propose ideas, make a case against a recommended direction (even one coming from our CISO, Director, or CEO), and trust that we aim to reach consensus resulting in the rapid delivery of the highest quality product. You will be a vocal participant introducing concepts and advising on resourcing. You will be a part of our Ninja Ops team, gaining exposure to different technical and non-technical domains of the company.

Impact. The size of the clients we are working with, and the scale we are operating at is rare in Canada. Everyone here makes a tangible contribution that is valued. You will be a key player, and your work will help us continue to exceed the expectations of our customers. Your success in this role will directly result in keeping Canadians safe.

Career development. You will be mentored by our Director, whose professional superpower is adaptability. You will be supported in your growth with the chance to build out the team, grow your reach and continue to explore new opportunities including a step up to Development Manager, at a company that rewards and recognizes merit.

How you will make an impact

  • Lead the team. You will be there for your team and be involved in supporting and recognizing their day-to-day accomplishments of your team. You will help set individual objectives and assist with setting career paths and professional development through mentorship.
  • Be Agile. You will lead sprint planning sessions, assigning and guiding the work of junior developers and co-op students. You will align status updates with company-wide daily stand-ups, and lead retrospectives and demonstrations. You will engage with agile software development processes while adhering to project deadlines.
  • Prioritize quality. You will conduct code reviews and oversee test automation, security auditing, and quality assurance tasks.
  • Research and analyze. You will actively participate in architecture discussions, presenting well-thought-out ideas and evidence for choosing a particular tool, process, or method.
  • Communicate. You will provide regular updates on the progress of the team’s deliverables to the Director.

What you bring

  • The education. We know not everyone gains their skills and knowledge through traditional formats. You may have a college certificate or diploma, a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • The experience. You are a Team Lead with hands-on technical expertise in open-source tools, including Python, Ruby (Rails), Angular/Vue.js, Docker, PostgreSQL/MongoDB, scripting automation. You excel at reviewing code and can jump in to be hands-on at any time.
  • The leadership. You have led a team, informally or formally, and you know how to motivate, mentor, and guide the work of individuals at any level. You are familiar with assigning resourcing and sprint tasks. You can instill your enthusiasm for using this methodology in your team without losing sight of customer project deadlines.
  • The communication skills. You can build relationships with cross-functional teams, encouraging open communication and knowledge sharing across different locations. You can confidently and effectively relay information verbally or in written form to senior leadership.
  • The drive. You come with a passion for solving complex problems with innovative technology. You thrive in a fast-paced environment while never losing sight of the details or big picture. You have broad and deep experience across the full SDLC, and you can draw on lessons learned and best practices to ensure we are delivering high quality work efficiently.
  • The heroics. You have a professional superpower. It could be the ability to focus on the user experience above all else like our Director of Product, Mahmoud, or our CFO Anna’s vision building strength, or our CEO Michael’s ability to know precisely when you are having fun (which you should be) and when you aren’t.
  • The bonus tools. You may have exposure to or the self-motivation to learn open-source tools, including:
    • Automation tools such as Ansible, Chef, Puppet, Terraform.
