Full-Time Senior Traffic Noise Engineer
Job Description
- Assist our Traffic Noise & Air Quality group leader in administering daily group activities and ensure compliance with all laws, rules, regulations, and policies related to traffic noise and its abatement.
- Provide traffic noise technical expertise to NCDOT through data collection and analysis, utilization of FHWA’s Traffic Noise Model (TNM) computer modeling software, and environmental report composition.
- Coordinate and review work performed by private consulting firms.
- Consultation with NCDOT engineers, other agencies, and the public.
- Assist with research and data collection related to emerging technologies and materials (e.g., tire/pavement noise using the On-Board Sound Intensity (OBSI) technology).
- Work very independently while interacting with senior engineers and technicians to collect, evaluate, analyze, and tabulate data for inclusion in project environmental documents, engineering designs, and contract documents.
- Have occasional overnight travel.
- Demonstrated advanced skill in traffic noise modeling using Traffic Noise Model; setting up in the field; operating Type I and Type II Sound Level Meters; using MicroStation, GeoPak, and GIS; and understanding engineering plans, provisions, and specifications related to traffic noise and air quality.
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of acoustical science and highway engineering, and expertise to provide advice to management regarding noise abatement policy, practices, and protocols with regard to highway projects.
- Understanding of NCDOT’s Traffic Noise Policy, the NCDOT Traffic Noise and NCDOT Air Quality Manual; Federal Highway Administration regulations related to traffic noise and abatement and project-level air quality analysis; other Federal Highway Administration regulations related to highway planning, design, and construction; federal and state laws related to environmental matters; and the organization and operation of NCDOT and FHWA.
- Skills writing and reviewing technical documents, communicating technical information clearly and accurately in correspondence or verbally, and responding courteously, clearly, and precisely to public inquiries, in both written and verbal forms.
- Experience managing contracts, reviewing scopes of work, estimating labor costs, negotiating fees, and directing the work of others.
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, and
- 4+ years of progressive technician experience; or
- An equivalent combination of education and experience.
- We may require registration as a professional engineer with the NC Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
