Full-Time Senior Software Engineer – (US Remote)
Job Description
At Tumult Labs, we are a world-class team, passionate about expanding the use and sharing of data while respecting individual privacy. Powered by the proven science of differential privacy, and building on decades of groundbreaking privacy research by our founders and scientists, our platform gives institutions the clarity and control to manage sensitive personal data at enterprise scale. Upcoming releases of a number of prominent public data sets are currently being built on our platform.
We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer, Remote to join our team. Software engineering at Tumult is a close collaboration between engineers and scientists. We are an agile shop with a fast-paced yet open engineering culture and frequent interactions across teams.
What will you accomplish?
- Protect the privacy of personal data in an age of data sharing.
- Build cutting-edge algorithms for advanced customer applications.
- Extend our platform with key features to delight new and existing customers.
- Routinely overcome a range of challenges, from scalability engineering to the implementation of advanced mathematical algorithms.
What will you need to be successful?
- Five or more years of experience working as a back-end or full-stack software engineer. You have practical experience writing high-quality code, tests, and documentation. You understand the principles and pitfalls of scalable, reliable software systems.
- Excellent communication skills. You can thrive in an asynchronous and fully-remote working environment, and you know how to pick the right communication tool for the problem at hand. Skillfully host implementation design discussions to develop ideas and resolve alternatives.
- Strong focus on team growth, health and inclusivity. You care about team members and can help grow their careers with task selection, mentoring and feedback. You value diversity, equity, and inclusion, and you understand how good communication and recruiting practices intersect with efforts to build a healthy culture.
What are optional traits that would pique our interest?
- API design or developer experience. Our current products are targeted towards data scientists and developers. We want to build simple, delightful interfaces, and we have to balance this against performance, robustness, or feature richness. Did you have to wrestle with similar trade-offs? Tell us about it!
- Data science or analytics experience. Differential privacy is about publishing data in a safe way, so it can then be used for scientific research or other kinds of data analyses. Data scientists are a key user profile for our products, and past experience in this space and/or familiarity with common tools (Pandas, NumPy, Spark, R, SAS, etc.) will help you understand both our customer’s problems and our developer-facing solutions.
- Privacy or security-critical applications, or other experiences that required a fair bit of adversarial thinking. We constantly need to think about what can go wrong with our software and break its privacy guarantees, so we can prevent it. We’d love to hear about that time you found a nasty bug or vulnerability before it could do any damage!
