Full-Time Senior Site Reliability Engineer

Job Description

The Senior Site Reliability Engineer helps to build and support the critical infrastructure services that customers rely on, working closely with other Technology teams, and delivers resilient and performant infrastructure in support of products and services.

This position reports to the Manager of Production Systems and has no direct reports.

Critical Job Duties:

  • Develops tooling, monitoring, and processes to make software services highly available and resilient, performant, reliable, and cost-conscious
  • Leads design discussions to translate business use cases into technical requirements and implements solutions to meet those requirements
  • Defines Service Level Indicators (SLIs) and Service Level Objectives (SLOs) to help teams make informed decisions about balancing reliability against engineering velocity
  • Drives technical projects, prioritizes work, identifies dependencies, and facilitates cross-functional discussions and decisions
  • Builds dashboards, configures monitoring and alerting, comparing performance to acceptable benchmarks
  • Writes code for internal applications, working to continually improve the experience for product users
  • Debugs across interconnected systems and at multiple layers, and supports incident resolution and effective problem closure
  • Serves on on-call rotation for some after-hour issue resolution with other on-call engineering staff
  • As an advocate for production-ready software, builds and maintains relationships with other Technology teams to ensure efficient and effective work

Candidate Profile and Qualifications

The successful candidate chooses courage over comfort, picks up new technologies, and frequently switches technical contexts with grace. He/she/they have a deep understanding of how the different layers and components of a web application fit together and are passionate about simplifying everything, automating wherever possible, and constantly working to improve the stability of Next Gear user’s experience. The candidate chooses pragmatism over novelty in tooling and language selection. He/she/they made the big mistakes and leaned in, resolved the problem and then engaged in and even led after-action reviews or post-mortems to help themselves and everyone else learn and grow.

  • Significant experience with a hyperscale public cloud. Certification is a plus.
  • Significant Technical Infrastructure and Operations experience
  • Must be hands on with writing and maintaining code in at least one programming language such as Python, PowerShell, JavaScript.
  • Experience automating infrastructure provisioning in a public cloud. Experience with provisioning tools like Ansible / Terraform is a plus.
  • Strong understanding of Azure and AWS technologies.
  • Solid knowledge of highly scalable, fault tolerant, distributed computing architectures.
  • Hands on implementation experience with DevOps/CICD methodology.
  • Experience with Micro service Architecture (Docker, Kubernetes, Spring Boot, etc.).
  • Experience with systems, network and application security.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to convey cloud technologies and concepts to technical and non-technical audiences is important. Collaboration and the integration of multiple viewpoints is key.

The position is full time. We encourage flexible working hours and support some level of telecommuting; however, this position is located in the office most days (post-COVID-19) if you are hired in an area where we have an office presence—Atlanta, GA; Louisville, CO; San Diego, CA; or Oxford, MS.
