Essential Functions and Objectives:

 

Develop, direct and lead on all district linguistic, translation and interpretation responsibilities for Denver Public Schools as a key member of the district’s Communications Team. Lead and manage the productivity, quality and improvement of linguistic services for the district. Responsible for strategic insight and management of programs and initiatives that affects the district in achieving its long term and overarching goals. Leads the day to day operations of a broader strategic function and shapes the framework of DPS in a forward thinking and dynamic manner. Primary emphasis is achieving results by building engagement and empowering their teams.

 

Oversee all matters related to the district’s translation and interpretation services conducted through the Communications team, including leading a team of full-time language specialists as well as independent contractors and multiple vendors to support communications in more than 200 languages.

 Responsible for collaborating with DPS General Counsel to ensure compliance with the U.S. Department of Justice Consent Decree and Americans with Disabilities Act Rights and Responsibilities.

– Responsible for strict budget management, forecasting, spending and reporting of General, Title III and Grant Funds related to linguistic services.

Develop and implement best practices in order to improve efficiency and quality of service including conflict resolution, vendor negotiations and new contracts. Supporting the Executive Director of Communications with the district’s mission and goals as well as the goals and priorities of the Communications team.

Responsible for strict budget management, forecasting, spending and reporting of General, Title III and Grant Funds related to linguistic services. Ownership of HR reporting. Increase translation and interpretation services rendered and receive consistently high customer satisfaction rates. Work to negotiate vendor rates while consistently delivering outstanding results. Develop templates for essential district communications so departments such as Transportation and Family & Community Engagement have key messaging in Consent Decree languages. Serve as a consultant and advisor for district-wide initiatives that have direct impact on student achievement such as Seal of Biliteracy. Work with the Media Relations team to handle emergencies 24/7. Work on district marketing efforts to ensure they are “translatable” and culturally appropriate.

– Seek out and handle client feedback in a professional manner. Confidentially handle performance evaluations, hiring and termination of direct reports.

Knowledge, Experience & Other Qualifications:

 

8 years of experience in leading a linguistic service team is required.

Knowledge of applicable laws and regulations is required.

Strong organizational and analytic skills and strong attention to detail is required.

– Strong interpersonal and leadership skills, including the ability to lead a high-performing team is required.

Ability to develop and interpret data and manage resources is required.

Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel and Outlook is required. 

– High degree of integrity in handling confidential information is required.

Graduate certificate in Translations/Interpretations is preferred.

American Translators Association (ATA) certification is preferred.

Court Interpretation Certification or other linguistic certifications is preferred.

Bilingual and biliterate in Spanish or any other language is preferred.

Ability to multi-task and juggle management of several high-priority projects in parallel is preferred.

– Ability to communicate diplomatically, persuasively, effective oral, written and presentation skills is preferred.

– Demonstrated Proficiency with TRADOS SDL and other CAT tools is preferred.

– Outstanding facilitation and communication skills, including ability to inspire others are preferred.

Ability to develop, plan, and implement short- and long-range goals, establish priorities, and organize resources is preferred.

Education Requirements:

– Bachelor’s Degree required in linguistics or related fields is preferred.

Master’s Degree preferred.
