Festival Programming
The Senior Manager, Festival Programming will Work with the Director, Festival Programming & Cinematheque on the overall planning, programming and execution of the Toronto International Film Festival and other applicable departmental programming initiatives. Key responsibilities will include: managing development of and execution of programming initiatives, cultivating and managing external film stakeholder relationships, oversight of the Festival schedule process. This position will manage full time and seasonal Festival Programming staff and independent contractors as required.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Manage development of and execution of Festival programming initiatives
- Oversee film tracking including: researching films and directing data entry, liaising with programmers and programming associates throughout the film selection process, and managing the regular cadence of invitations
- Act as a Programmer for applicable film selections for Festival e.g. Canadian films
- Liaise with external film stakeholders and Festival programmers re: film submissions, selection status, negotiations, and schedule
- Travel as applicable to specified destinations as related to stakeholder relationship management and Festival preview screenings
- Oversee Festival preview screening schedule, including prioritizing and assigning individuals/committees to preview screenings
- Manage the film selection (i.e. Programming List) and invitation process for the Festival, including invitation sign-off
- Participate in and lead Programming meetings, Screen films as part of different selection committees when relevant
- Oversee the production of key Festival Programming events
- In collaboration with Film Office, oversee the Festival guest budget and related guest considerations
- Work with the Press Office on official film releases
- Participate in interviews and content pieces as required
- Oversee timely delivery of programme notes
- Oversee the Festival Schedule process: schedule board conflict check, data entry, proofing, and screening schedule notification letter processes, for all internal/external communications, and online/printed publications;
- Hire, onboard, train and supervise applicable staff and contractors including recruiting, goal setting, coaching, and performance management
- Host screenings and events linked to programming including year-round subscription series as required
- Liaise and manage relationships with internal teams and external stakeholders to ensure unified approach to programming presentation and promotion
- Oversee department budget and related communication with Finance, including project budgets for all programming initiatives
- Assist Director with administration of annual budget
- Attend Curation meetings to contribute to digital platform curatorial vision continuity from festival to year-round programming, when needed
- Monitor and implement Diversity & Inclusion initiatives in internal practices and across key Festival external communications; including working with internal identity-based community clusters
- Oversee auxiliary programming from other departments (i.e., Corporate Partnerships, Brand & Media)
- Oversee the administration of Canada’s Top Ten Screening Series;
- Lead and attend meetings and events with the Director, Festival Programming, TIFF’s CEO, and other Festival Programming staff and internal or external stakeholders as required
- Lead or participate in orientation/training sessions, as required
- Contribute to departmental planning including: strategic and operational plans, annual budgets, post mortems
- Other related duties as required and assigned

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- 7+ years experience working in arts and culture management experience managing staff and ability to lead and give direction effectively
- 5+ years experience in film festival programming and/or administration
- Experience managing or coordinating large, long-lead projects
- Extensive knowledge of contemporary film and experiential programming and related industries
- Extensive knowledge of world cinema
- Experience writing about film (criticism, essays, articles)
- Experience with guest/talent/speaker management
- Strong organizational and project management skills with extreme attention to detail, timelines and objectives and ability to prioritize
- Precise memory for names, positions, companies and situations
- Mature personal judgment, exhibiting a high level of professionalism and diplomacy
- Able to handle difficult situations and people with a positive, problem-solving attitude
- Excellent interpersonal, public relations and communication skills
- Experience with managing and monitoring budgets
- Strong negotiation skills and experience with contracts
- Excellent computer skills and data management skills, including databases, CRMs, project management tools, internet research, Microsoft Office, Google (experience with Artifax considered an asset)
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment in fast-paced, high pressure environments
