Full-Time Senior Manager, Communications

Summary

GreatSchools is looking for a communications professional with a passion for equity in education and experience working with the field of education. Your work will help guide the communications strategy to support millions of families, policymakers, and grassroots, policy and civil rights organizations across the United States.

GreatSchools is the leading national nonprofit empowering parents to unlock educational opportunities for their children and support stronger schools in their community. We aim to make school quality information relevant and actionable to support equity for underserved communities who have faced systemic racism and unjust barriers to access a quality education for their children. We are the only national organization that collects education data from all 51 state departments of education and the federal government and then provides analysis, insights and school quality ratings to parents, communities, advocacy organizations, researchers, policymakers and others. GreatSchools.org reaches 45 million users per year, 40% of whom are from low-income households. We also work to uncover bright spots in American education and catalyze discussions about equity. We have worked for two decades to develop parent support resources, including articles, videos, podcasts, parent tips, and learning materials parents can use at home to strengthen the home-school connection and keep their child learning and on track.

Reporting to the VP, External Affairs, the Senior Manager for Communications will be responsible for the following activities:

  • Develop and write copy for collateral materials, including op-eds, press releases, blogs, newsletters, media pitches, etc.
  • Develop talking points, one-pagers, and presentations on key initiatives and issues.
  • Manage projects to ensure they are publication-ready
  • Conduct media outreach, including cultivating relationships with reporters and bloggers, pitching, and briefing, with the goal of placement in national and targeted state media outlets
  • Support the dissemination of new policy reports, parenting support resources, and insights about America’s parents maximizing reach with the media and the field.
  • Provide rapid-response communications support as opportunities and challenges arise.
  • Develop and execute internal communications plan
  • Perform other duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective communications for the organization

 

Skills and Requirements:

  • 5+ years experience working in communications, public relations, marketing, or similar fields
  • Strong writing and presentation skills
  • Familiarity with education data, policy, and/or family engagement
  • Established relationships with journalists and familiarity with education media landscape at national and state levels
  • Demonstrated ability to develop effective national and local media strategies, manage complex policy communications issues
  • Exceptional project management and collaboration skills
  • Maintains respectful and accepting approach to others
  • Collaboratively and creatively supports the work efforts of colleagues at all levels and in all areas of the organization
  • Strong personal understanding of diversity, equity and inclusion principles, policies, and technical implementation, especially in education context

Position Location:

Remote, Oakland (CA), Washington, DC.

Travel:

When deemed safe by health standards, you may need to travel 1-2 times per quarter (2-4 day trips) to partner institutions, convenings and meetings across the country. When safe, periodic travel (2-3 times per year) to Oakland, CA will be necessary.
