UKCEH is looking for an experienced Senior Freshwater Ecologist to join our 600-strong organisation, contributing to scientific discovery and generating the data, insights and solutions that researchers, businesses and governments need to solve complex environmental challenges.

Working at UKCEH is rewarding. Our science makes a real difference, enabling people and the environment to prosper, and enriching society. We are the custodians of a wealth of environmental data collected by UKCEH and its predecessors over more than 60 years.

As a valued member of our team, you’ll get:

  • 27 days annual leave, rising to 29 days after five years, plus 3 days for our Christmas closure
  • 10% employer pension contribution
  • Enhanced maternity and paternity leave (subject to qualifying requirements)
  • 24 hour, 365-day access to support with physical, mental, social, health or financial issues plus access to our trained Welfare Officers
  • Flexible working opportunities

And much more

We are looking for an established and highly motivated Freshwater Ecologist to join our vibrant team of researchers within the Freshwater Restoration and Sustainability (FRS) Group. In joining a highly collaborative, multi-disciplinary team, you’ll be contributing to essential research on the evolving state of our freshwater environments.

We need your science leadership and excellent communication skills, as well as your ability to generate research income from national and international funding bodies. Naturally, you’ll be experienced in leading high impact publications in your field.  Through effective national and international collaboration, you’ll be able to demonstrate you are helping to set the international research agenda and your work will have a high degree of policy relevance.

In working with senior members of the team, you’ll help expand and integrate your own skill sets within other areas of science across UKCEH, to address complex scientific problems. We’re looking for your skills to help us continually enhance our world-class environmental research.

Applications are encouraged from candidates with a broad understanding of freshwater ecology across all ecosystem types and those who can demonstrate specialism in a particular topic (e.g., plankton ecology; trophic interactions; microbial ecology; macrophyte ecology; meta-community analyses; etc). You’ll also need to be highly numerate with good knowledge of statistics.

You’ll work across multiple projects, which include field sites in the Arctic and the Antarctic, Latin America, the Caribbean, sub-Saharan Africa, and across the UK.

Our projects include MERLIN, uPcycle, GHG-Aqua and the long term monitoring of Loch Leven.

You will be joining a leading independent, not-for-profit research institute that is committed to recruiting talented people like you, progressing your career and giving you the support you need to thrive at UKCEH.

Your main responsibilities will include:

  • A leading role in developing research proposals and projects related to freshwater ecology
  • Building partnerships with key stakeholders and collaborators interested in freshwater ecology, conservation and management
  • Project management – managing teams, deliverables, resources, budgets and risks
  • Leading and assisting in the design and implementation of field campaigns on lakes, rivers, wetlands, and coastal ecosystems in the UK and internationally, including boat-based activities
  • Taking a leading role in a particular area of specialism in freshwater ecology within the FRS Group, and across UKCEH and its stakeholders, to build a body of work for the advancement of your area of science
  • Actively working to support the strategic aims of your science and our organisational goals

For this role we are looking for somebody who has:

  • A PhD in environmental science or ecology and a sound knowledge of policy relevant to freshwater sciences
  • A proven international reputation in your freshwater ecology specialism, evidenced by several high impact peer-reviewed journal papers and/or published reports
  • Evidence of winning funding and managing projects in freshwater ecology
  • Leadership skills, able to motivate and inspire with integrity
  • Expertise in leading field campaigns in remote locations
  • Experience of managing research teams – to effectively manage time, resources, and budgets to successfully deliver projects
  • Effective line management skills, able to coach/mentor and support career development
  • Excellent communications skills, able to develop new collaborations with UK and international researchers, and establish excellent working relationships with multi-/trans-disciplinary groups
  • Statistical analysis experience of complex ecological datasets, using programming languages (e.g., R, Python etc.)
  • A full UK (manual) driving licence
  • A willingness to travel internationally and work overseas, in remote locations for up to three weeks at a time

Desirable Skills:

  • Project Management qualification/accreditation (Prince2, MSP, SCRUM/Agile)
  • Management training
  • Experience of chairing committees or working groups
