Full-Time Senior Environmental Specialist

Job Description

The position serves as a technical environmental and operational excellence resource for the EHS Department at the St. Louis Site.  This position serves as the main point of contact for driving sustainability efforts and continuous improvement and is responsible for managing the wastewater program at the Site. This position also serves as the principle point of contact for EHS metric data gathering and reporting for the St. Louis Plant. The candidate must exhibit a working knowledge of environmental conservation techniques and principles, working knowledge of the laws, ordinances and regulations governing environmental efforts

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Responsible for the direction and coordination of environmental sustainability activities of the St. Louis Plant. Provide direction to determine program direction and goals.  Leads sustainability efforts to identify and coordinate programs to optimize yields and reduce waste and energy.  Identify, coordinate and implement Pollution Prevention Projects.  Targets capital projects for energy cost savings and emission reductions.
  • Encourage sustainability efforts; monitors progress, energy use reduction and other sustainability measures; provides regular updates. Researches and prepares recommendations for sustainability and emission reduction measures based on industry best practice, recommends policies and actions that encourage sustainability efforts.  Develop and maintain a registry of sustainability programs and maintains the waste minimization and pollution prevention plans.
  • Coordinate activities with departments that accomplish all levels of conservation and sustainable development to include green purchasing, energy conservation, solid waste recycling, green building, resource and water conservation, greenhouse gas reduction, renewable resources, government funding, and environmental reporting metrics.
  • Drive quality, service, costs and delivery performance via continuous improvement tools, methodology, analysis and leadership.
  • Monitor and manage wastewater environmental permit conditions to ensure compliance. Coordinate collection of samples and analysis of environmental samples with analytical laboratories, process areas and outside contractors including managing corresponding contracts.  Update and maintain facility water balance for the Site.
  • Responsible for recordkeeping requirements including coordination and submittal of regulatory reports including, Title V Air Permit, quarterly wastewater reports, annual EPCRA Reports (Section 311/312 and 313), TSCA CDR Reports and Safety Data Sheet (SDS) Management, as required.  Responsible for overall management of Spill Prevention, Control and Countermeasures (SPCC) and Slug Plans for the facility.   Responsible for managing the RADMON program required under the Site’s NRC license and collect monitoring data reports which is then available for the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) for review.
  • Interacts with federal, state and local regulators to resolve compliance issues; establishes permit requirements and assists in federal, state and local regulatory audits.
  • Participate in Health, Safety and Environmental reviews of pharmaceutical processes and facility upgrades for compliance with applicable environmental regulations (NESHAP, PEG, major process changes, etc.) and or site procedures. Update and maintain facility wastewater inventory as part of facility Environmental Management System (EMS).
  • Conduct training for site employees regarding compliance with environmental regulations, site permits and site procedures. Revise procedures and training programs as necessary.
  • Lead and participate in Root Cause Analysis teams.
  • Maintain required safety and/or environmental program records, including: incident investigations; inspection results, program review reports, drill and audit findings, corrective actions, training, medical surveillance, etc.  Prepare and submit periodic reports of safety and environmental program activity, status and performance statistics to plant management and Corporate EHS as required.  Communicate and monitor inspections for the EHS Index.
  • Participate in “On-Call” EHS duties for off shift hours.
  • Other duties as assigned.

DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC/NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s (B.S.) degree in Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Management, Environmental Science or a related science or engineering degree

                    

Experience:

Minimum of 5 years of environmental experience in a chemical or pharmaceutical facility.

Preferred Skills/Qualifications:

  • Professional training and/or certification such as Professional Engineer, Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM), 40 Hour Hazwoper, etc.
  • Possess high level planning, budget and financial management experience in a high performance management organization. Must be able to understand and communicate the long and short-term benefits of sustainability efforts into cost savings. Must be able to establish meaningful performance metrics to track and measure success.
  • Training and experience in Six Sigma and Lean initiatives.
  • Strong analytical/statistical problem solving tools. Demonstrated expertise in root cause analysis tools.
  • Project management experience required. Process safety Management (PSM) experience is desirable. Ability to plan, direct and execute multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong knowledge of chemistry, physics and engineering principles.
  • Experience with a wide variety of unit operations and both batch and continuous processes.
  • Understand sustainable technology as it relates to energy, waste, carbon emissions, green building and other areas.
  • Be passionate and understand current concepts of conservation and sustainable development including resource and water conservation, green purchasing, energy conservation, waste recycling, green building, greenhouse gas reduction, and environmental reporting metrics.
  • Participate with incident response, as needed.
  • Ability to perform in office / plant working conditions. Position may require physical activity such as standing for prolonged periods, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching and handling.

Other Skills:

  • Demonstrated ability to implement and achieve continuous improvement.
  • Demonstrated ability to drive change with influence.
  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook) and Access.
  • Preferable to have background in smart growth and sustainable design; waste reduction.
