Full-Time Senior Counsel – Employee Benefits

Job Description

This is a Senior Counsel position on the employee benefits and insurance team that provides legal expertise and advice to Empower with respect to a broad range of complex legal matters relating to the company’s SEC registered and unregistered variable annuity products and insurance stable value products used in conjunction with retirement plans and retail clients.

Responsible for working on complex legal issues and projects so that Empower’s business goals are attained legally and with regulatory compliance. This position will focus on researching, interpreting, and advising on federal and state laws and regulations applicable to the company’s business and complex legal issues related to Empower’s group and individual variable annuity insurance products used in conjunction with retirement plans and retail clients. Specifically, the legal work may include:

  • Researching, providing advice regarding, and submitting individual and group variable annuity and contingent deferred annuity securities filings with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on Forms N-4, S-1, and S-6.
  • Managing securities filings relating to variable annuities, such as annual update filings, material change filings, sticker filings, 498A summary variable annuity prospectus filings, etc.
  • Researching and providing advice relating to registered and unregistered insurance company separate accounts, including plan of operation filings.
  • Researching and drafting insurance contracts and amendments in conjunction with the business.
  • Providing legal advice with respect to state and federal regulatory compliance matters.
  • Managing the insurance contract regulatory approval process.

The position requires the ability to:

(i) identify, understand and analyze the legal aspects of a business issue;

(ii) develop and gain approval to implement an approved legal strategy;

(iii) provide business focused risk assessments;

(iv) interact effectively with internal clients, external counsel, regulators and other associates;

(v) collaborate with other legal department teams and functional areas within the company;

(vi)  manage multiple, competing priorities with strict deadlines and attain results while managing through ambiguity;

(vii) communicate clearly both verbally and in writing;

(viii) work independently and in a collaborative team environment;

(ix) review and provide expertise to less experienced counsel.

What you will bring

  • 3+ years of relevant legal experience

The salary range below describes the minimum to maximum base salary range for this position in the location listed. Non-sales positions have the opportunity to participate in a bonus program. Sales positions are eligible for sales incentives, and in some instances a bonus plan, whereby total compensation may far exceed base salary depending on individual performance. Actual compensation offered may vary from posted hiring range based upon geographic location, work experience, education, licensure requirements and/or skill level and will be finalized at the time of offer.

Base Salary Range

$ 134,500.00-215,200.00
