Full-Time Senior Assistant Engineer – Division Design Construct (DDC)
Job Description
- Generate estimates and help develop conceptual designs related to our DDC unit for future- and currently-funded projects.
- Coordinate estimates with the Resident & Division Traffic Engineers, DDC Engineers, Utility Coordinators, Right of Way Agents, and other NCDOT teams to ensure all four project phases (Physical Engineering, Right of Way, Utilization, and Construction) are managed.
- Oversee and track DDC project schedules and initiate schedule changes when needed.
- Lead funding requests for all three phases and project tracking in SAP throughout the project duration.
- Oversee the design and review of all disciplines related to the preparation of project plans using CADD (Microstation and Geopack) for Division let, State Transportation Improvement Projects (STIP), Spot Safety, High Hazard, Direct Allocation and any other projects.
- Assist the DDC Engineer and design staff with the more complex designs, and during recruitment for openings in our unit.
- Serve as a second project manager for DDC under the DDC Engineer.
- Help manage project tasks while attending site visits, preconstruction conferences, coordinating activities with survey crews, and final walkthroughs,
- Manage and coordinate all aspects of project development, including planning and design, while aiming to keep projects within scope and on schedule,
- Strong understanding of funding designations (Hi/Lo, Economic Development, Spot Safety, High Hazard, Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP), Spot Mobility, etc.) to write division purchase order contracts (DPOCs).
- Solid understanding of DPOC documents and knowledge of NCDOT standard provisions, standards drawings, engineers estimates, creating/maintaining special provisions, and developing contact times while coordinating with STIP project managers, Division Traffic Engineers, DDC Engineers, and Contracts Engineers.
- Engineering skills to perform plan reviews and discuss roadway engineering concepts for the DDC Unit and STIP Unit.
- Management experience overseeing junior Engineers and Technicians.
- Experience applying professional engineering principles and practices to troubleshoot and solve roadway design challenges.
- Skills and experience using GIS systems.
- Computer skills in Microsoft Office, CADD, Microstation, Geopak, and math functions.
- Customer service experience related to solving problems involving explaining engineering concepts to various customer groups.
- Ability to make independent decisions.
- Working knowledge of standard road maintenance and construction procedures.
- Ability to operate state vehicle.
- Communication skills to collaborate effectively with co-workers, the department, contractors, local and state officials and the public.
- Experience to understand, explain, and administer project assignments.
- Ability to interpret plans provisions, specifications, policies, procedures, and regulations.
- Candidates with a valid Driver’s License.
- We may require registration as a professional engineer by the NC Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
- Bachelors Degree in engineering, and
- 3+ years of relevant experience; or
- An equivalent combination of education and experience.
