Senior Advocacy Audiences Manager

Summary

The Wikimedia Foundation is looking for a Senior Advocacy Audiences Manager to join the Public Policy Team reporting to the Vice President of Global Advocacy. As the Senior Advocacy Audiences Manager, you will develop and execute a plan to advance Wikimedia’s values and policy advocacy based on Wikimedia’s positions on crucial issues for Wikimedia’s mission, including copyright, intermediary liability, freedom of expression, access to knowledge, privacy, censorship, competition, communications and computing law. In this role, you will develop strategies for the Public Policy team, and work closely with the communications team in elevating this work in key areas. Your work will help the Wikimedia Foundation establish and defend a legal and regulatory landscape that is essential to Wikipedia and other free knowledge projects, enabling the Foundation advance its mission and empowering people to participate in culture and knowledge.

We seek candidates with deep knowledge and expertise around policy issues and strategies to influence the landscape that affects Wikipedia.

You are responsible for:

  • Identifying  effective strategies to engage, and grow the Wikimedia Foundation’s audience for policy advocacy in the U.S. and in other countries.
  • Engaging and motivating the wider Wikimedia community on new and ongoing policy advocacy matters to include them as partners in this work.
  • Collaborating with the Policy team and Communications team, international Wikimedia community, and other allies to increase awareness and influence global policy on critical issues.
  • Explaining how policy issues affect the free knowledge movement and Wikimedia projects and develop materials to introduce key partners and audiences to this work.
  • Briefing and educating key Foundation staff and Wikimedia volunteers about Wikimedia’s work and mission and the importance of policy in the Wikimedia movement’s shared success.
  • Raising the profile of policy advocacy for the Wikimedia Foundation working closely with the Wikimedia communications team.

Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree, plus graduate degree or relevant experience in law, public policy, or related fields and excellent academic credentials.
  • 3+ years of working on communications on relevant policy issues in government, advocacy groups, or think tanks in a public-facing capacity.
  • Proven execution of data-driven campaigns that influence policy and elevate issues critical to the work of your organization.
  • Deep understanding of intellectual property, privacy, and other internet law issues.
  • Excellent communication, teamwork, project management, and time management skills.

Qualities that are important to us:

  • Ability to learn on the job, spot issues, think fast, and comfortably deal with complex and ambiguous issues with sound judgment.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally as needed, and to work or travel on weekends when necessary.
  • Ability to work with colleagues across time-zones and regions who do not have English as their primary language.
  • Proven ability to engage media and build long-term relationships with key influencers to drive results.

Additionally, we’d love it if you have:

  • Ability to speak other languages, experience living or working outside the United States, or past work on international advocacy issues.
  • Experience in graphic design, data visualization, or visual storytelling.
  • Experience in public interest or social justice advocacy work, or experience working in the technology, government, or nonprofit sector.
  • Experience with open source, free culture, free software, or online communities.
  • Experience as a member of a volunteer community.
