Denver Botanic Gardens is currently seeking a Full Time Senior Accountant in our Finance and Accounting Department! Read below to see if the requirements might be a good fit for you:

Position Summary:

Reporting to the Director of Finance, the Senior Accountant is responsible for general accounting, revenue recognition, cash management, banking, and business process improvement support. These duties include independently and accurately analyzing and monitoring general and sub-ledger accounting. The Senior Accountant will also be responsible for audit preparation and other related duties.

This position has a hybrid work schedule.

Requirements

General Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assists Director of Finance with preparation of the annual Federal Information Tax Return (Form 990).
  • In collaboration with the Information Technology department, directs projects automating the import of information from various sources, including but not limited to ATMS, TAM, and Raiser’s Edge into Financial Edge.
  • Coordinates the financial management of all admissions, class activity, rentals and event ticket revenue.
  • Maintains and ensures accuracy of all private event deferred revenue accounts.
  • Provides monthly and quarterly general ledger analysis to the Director of Finance. Analysis requires comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the Denver Botanic Gardens processes and procedures.
  • Works directly with external auditors on questions, problems and documentation related to areas of responsibility.
  • Monitors, records, and reconciles daily cash and credit card activity.
  • Reconciles cash accounts monthly.
  • Leads reconciliation of membership and contribution sub-ledgers.
  • Reconciles and maintains all prepaid expense accounts.
  • Reconciles and remits payment for monthly sales taxes.
  • Completes other general ledger reconciliations as assigned.
  • Prepares month-end and year-end journal entries for assigned accounts.
  • Oversees all Denver Botanic Gardens petty cash accounting and auditing.
  • Serves as the contact for all credit card processing questions and cash procedural training.
  • Supports all revenue generating departments, including facilitating monthly close.
  • Prepares billing invoices and maintains AR Aging monthly.
  • Works directly with various departments to complete revenue and expense transfers, ensuring the accuracy of account balances.
  • In collaboration with revenue generating departments, research and dispute chargebacks as needed.
  • Prepares schedules, footnotes, and other materials for year-end financial statements as requested.
  • Assists Director of Finance with documents and schedules for interim and annual financial statement audit process.
  • Answers accounting and financial questions posed from various individuals by researching and interpreting data.
  • Regular attendance at the worksite may be required. As with all positions at Denver Botanic Gardens, the incumbent must be in good performance standing to be eligible for remote work. Remote work is at the discretion of management at all times.

Position Qualifications: Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret financial reports, and to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, internal staff or members of the business community, and to effectively communicate information to employee groups.
  • Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent.
  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Must have proven excellent customer service, interpersonal, and communication skills in dealing with the public.
  • Ability to maintain stability under pressure and able to deal well with stressful situations.
  • Ability to be flexible and willing to modify plans when necessary, throughout the day.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends and/or holidays.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Suite products, specifically Word, Excel and Outlook and Teams.
  • Ability to work overtime as necessary.
  • Must be a positive representative of the Gardens both internally and externally at all times.
  • Must work with respect and cooperation at all times with fellow employees and the public.
  • Must be committed to working safely at all times.

Experience/Education:

  • Bachelors degree and/or combination of education and equivalent experience is required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in field/industry is required.
  • An active Certified Public Accountant Designation or a Masters in Accounting is a plus.
