Department Summary
The College of Science at the University of North Texas consists of the Departments of Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics and the interdisciplinary programs Teach North Texas, BioDiscovery Institute, Advanced Environmental Research Institute, and Interdisciplinary Program in Applied and Computational Science. The college offers Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD degrees in science and mathematics, currently serving more than 4,000 majors. Our faculty are world-class researchers in science and mathematics, and the college faculty and staff work together to provide excellent support to our students in their academic education and professional development.

The Office of Health Professions is committed to helping UNT students create a pathway to health professional programs, such as medical school, dental school, PA school, etc.
Position Overview
Advising students seeking careers in the health professions. Some administrative responsibilities for the Office of Health Professions. Representing the Office of Health Professions to multiple constituencies. Manages student records.
Minimum QualificationsMaster’s Degree and four years of experience in student affairs, student services, counseling, professional academic advising, or related experience.

Preferred Qualifications

The preferred candidate will possess the following additional qualifications:

* Experience advising students interested in the health professions.
* Experience writing letters of recommendation for students.
* Supervisory experience of academic advisers, counselors, office staff, and/or student workers.

 

Work Schedule
Monday – Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm
Occasional weekends
Job Duties
Advise students on the requirements for being admitted to health professional schools; includes remote advising and e-mail correspondence. Advise students on the Joint Admission Medical Program (JAMP) and support the JAMP Faculty Director when necessary.
Advise students on how to develop strong professional school applications; including conducting mock interviews, brainstorming and editing application essays, and providing other professional development for students.
Counsel students who are not competitive for admission to professional schools; create a strategic plan to become competitive or discuss alternative career paths.
Coordinate the logistics of the Health Professions Advisory Committee (HPAC) including the following: Collect and file HPAC documentation for a group of assigned students, schedule student interviews, match all HPAC students with faculty members for additional HPAC interviews, collect and file letters of recommendation for each HPAC applicant, and upload letter packets to professional school application services.
Supervise the Academic Counselor and Associate Academic Advisor on the Health Professions Advising Team.
Conduct seminars about the professional school application process; create programs or additional seminars that support the development of UNT’s pre-health population.
Serve as a member of the Health Professions Advisory Committee (HPAC). Conduct interviews for a group of assigned HPAC students and write 20+ committee letters of recommendation or letter addendums each application cycle.
Write letters of recommendation for students applying to professional schools, post-baccalaureate programs, scholarships, and other various other programs.
Become a member of the health professions advising organizations and attend conferences when available. Organizations include: NAAHPSAAHP, and TAAHP.
Coordinate the process of reviewing and selecting candidates for health professions scholarships awarded by the College of Science, which includes filling out and submitting award documentation to the Financial Aid & Scholarship office.
Represent the Office of Health Professions at UNT recruiting events when necessary, on and off campus.
Demonstrate an ability to be an effective team member by assisting others when needed; including serving as a marshal during COS commencement ceremonies.
Conduct and assist in the production and dissemination of accurate information for students concentrating in the health professions.
