Job Description

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

Internews’ Earth Journalism Network (EJN) aimes to engage and support journalists and media organizations around the globe to effectively produce and promote environmental and climate news content.

This is a temporary, part-time position expected to start in August or September 2021, and last for an estimated 10 months with the possibility of being extended.

LOGISTICS

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Internews’ headquarters and global offices are closed or partially remote. Internews staff are currently working remotely until at least 1 July 2021. Until further notice, this position will also function remotely. Ultimately, this position may be fully remote, partially remote, or based in our Washington, D.C. office. Candidates who would prefer an office-based position should feel free to express this preference; however, this position is not eligible for relocation support.

Remote-based candidates should be based in the United States or United Kingdom, and should have work authorization in their location that does not require sponsorship from Internews.

DAY-TO-DAY TASKS will include:

  • Support the EJN team by handling social media and other outreach. Tasks may include posting links to stories and announcements on Twitter, Instagram, and Google Groups, boosting announcements and ads on Twitter and Facebook and helping to devise and implement other social media activities;
  • Support the judging of grant and Fellowship applications;
  • Research and write up impact stories documenting the results of EJN activities for our newsletter and website;
  • Monitor EJN’s outreach and impact by reviewing analytics, collecting data and conducting surveys or interviews for stories to appear on the website or in our newsletter;
  • Help manage time-limited projects, such as EJN’s Climate Change Media Fellowship program;
  • Update the Earth Journalism Network Wikipedia page;
  • Plan and manage logistics for virtual webinar events and possibly in-person ones, which may include, but is not limited to, visa application support, airfare and lodging requests, and liaising with team members to coordinate travel;
  • Take notes during meetings and update photo library;
  • Think of ideas for additional outreach in coverage areas, be it by connecting with other media organizations or finding networks through which to spread our opportunities;
  • There may be further opportunities to get involved with various tasks depending on candidate’s skillset and preference; and
  • In all duties, an understanding of and demonstrated commitment to upholding Internews’ Core Values.

QUALIFICATIONS WE’RE LOOKING FOR

Required

  • Strong background in social media management and communications
  • Work or educational experience in media, environmental issues or international development preferred
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Excel and other spreadsheet and data analyses software also preferred
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing
  • Editorial and/or copy-editing experience preferred
  • Understanding of the media landscape and ability to think out of the box on ways we can support it going forward.
