The Royal Navy’s Submarine Service has operated the UK’s Nuclear Deterrent every hour of every day for nearly 50 years, protecting our nation from the most extreme threats.
If you are interested in working on the UK’s Submarine Projects and want to support our armed forces in current and future operations, the SDA have some exciting opportunities based in Barrow-in-Furness to support them on a variety of vital projects. The business has a full order book of arguably the UK’s most challenging engineering projects, the Dreadnought class of next generation Ballistic Missile submarines.
The SDA Principle Naval Overseer team (PNO) are searching for a Technical Overseer with a Nuclear Specialism. This position would see you joining a team of seven with a great working environment, in a role that also offers a large amount of autonomy over your work.
Responsibilities
We are keen to speak to and support those candidates that are motivated and driven to progress their careers, with the successful candidates expected to upskill and develop their nuclear knowledge via reading and analysis of documentation around the build and systems of the Nuclear reactor plant.
As our Technical Overseer you will be expected to advise on technical problem solving, acting as the Nuclear Propulsion Representative for Authorisation Groups.
Using your knowledge of nuclear propulsion systems, and construction processes, you will also need to define technical requirements, manage solution development and ensure compliance with the customers’ requirements both in design and during the product build.
The assignments we take on are an integral interface to our supply base ensuring technical solutions meet the needs and requirements of the armed forces.
Other day to day responsibilities could include, but are not limited to:
• Attending design review meetings as the SDA representative.
• Assessing proposed designs for sections of the Dreadnought Submarine
• Determining quality management and assurance approaches ensuring technical risks are understood and managed
• Coordinating activities such as Conditions Management; walkrounds of the shipyard and ensuring compliance with correct process requirements.
• You will also, on occassion be required to brief project teams on findings and anticipated delays to build.
• Undertaking verification and validation of the Submarine Design and Build against the Customer requirements, including undertaking build surveillance and attending test groups
• Managing build concessions as BAE Systems and other parties deliver the first of class and subsequent boats.
Please note that due to the nature of the projects involved, this role will be open to Sole UK nationals only.

External Applicants : First Appointment Expenses up to a limit of £8,000
Internal Applicants: Internal candidates will be eligible for full relocation expenses.
What you will be assessed against
To be found successful you must demonstrate the following essential criteria:
• A Level 4 Qualification in a relevant Science or Engineering subject, or the equivalent knowledge and experience.
• Member of a relevant Professional Engineering / Science institute or equivalent body
• Experience in Quality Assurance in one or more of the following areas: Oil & Gas; Aerospace manufacturing; Nuclear; Shipbuilding.
It would benefit your application should you be able to demonstrate the following desirable criteria:
• Experience of Nuclear Propulsion in Submarines
