Full-Time SDA Platform Management System Technical Lead

Defence Equipment and Support – Posted by Defence Equipment and Support Barrow-in-Furness, England, United Kingdom

Job Description

Salary

£37,400 – £44,000 per annum (plus benefits)

Job description

The Dreadnought Alliance has the aim of delivering four nuclear deterrent submarines to replace the Royal Navy’s current Vanguard Class boats. HMS Dreadnought will undertake its first patrol in the early 2030s, with the other three submarines delivered in subsequent short order. The Dreadnought Class design is nearing completion and construction has been underway for several years, but there are still some areas of the design that require significant MOD input as an intelligent customer. In the coming years, the submarines will undergo a rigorous Test & Commissioning programme before handover to the Royal Navy, and all design issues must be successfully addressed during that period.

The Dreadnought Alliance Engineering Team is looking for a Technical Lead for the Platform Management System (PMS), who will join a section reviewing, approving and improving the design and implementation of the system. This is a challenging and rewarding role, with exceptional opportunities to develop your engineering knowledge and skills, and to have a substantial impact on an extremely exciting and high profile programme.

As part of this vital role, you will have unique access to the design, construction, testing and commissioning of the PMS and related control systems in a nuclear-powered submarine. You will have a talent for communicating, influencing and making effective decisions, and will be involved in approving aspects of the PMS design and operation, dealing with the shipbuilder on a regular basis.

Please note that due the security requirements of the role, this position is restricted to Sole UK nationals only.

Responsibilities

The team is based at the BAES shipyard, Barrow, and the role will have a requirement for occasional travel to other sites around the UK. Candidates may base themselves in Barrow or Bristol, but will be required at BAES, Barrow, approximately 3 days/week.

Your responsibilities will include, but not be limited to the following:

• Developing technical, functional and system requirements, including definition, integration, and change management
• Managing system and constituent equipment design, working with other parties to meet essential design milestones such as design preparation for qualification testing
• Managing the technical risk and mitigations associated with the PMS design
• Managing the console design, including dependencies and interfaces with other systems and operators
• Identifying system and technical risk whilst providing guidance on C&I issues
• Supporting development of control system software, firmware and planning of development lifecycle
• Supporting the development of the PMS safety case, including support safety analysis and regulatory approval
• Supporting the development of a supportable system design, including through life support
• Supporting the qualification of the hardware and certification/acceptance of the software
• Supporting the development of the safety justification by involvement in safety activities such as hazard analysis and failure modes analysis
• Contributing to development of Engineering Management Plans, including the development of processes
• Interacting with both contractors and original equipment manufacturers, and liaising with internal and external customers
• Attending demonstrations and trials of control system equipment and interfacing systems, supporting the design team and equipment manufacturer, shore side, on boat and during sea trials
