Job description

We are looking for a Mechanical Engineer or Naval Architect for an exciting and challenging role!

The Naval Authority Group (NAG) is a pan-maritime group supporting Submarines and Ships, within the Submarine Delivery Agency (SDA).

The Naval Authority Group is responsible for:

• Provision of Naval Authority Safety Assurance including Certification activities.
• Provision of NAG Technical Support including development of technical solutions and SME advice and guidance.
• Delivery of Training and Development activities including the running of NAG specific courses, seminars and functions to support SQEP (Suitably Qualified and Experienced Person) development.
• Development management of Maritime Technical Publications.
• Management of the Maritime Strategic Capability Agreement (MSCA), between MOD and QinetiQ.

The NAG SM team provide Naval Authority Assurance and Subject Matter Expertise (SME) to the Submarine projects from concept, through build and in-service.

As the Lead Engineer you will support the Submarine Watertight Integrity (WTI) team, and will need to demonstrate a good knowledge of Naval Submarines, valves and systems associated with watertight integrity.

The successful incumbent will develop an in depth knowledge of WTI advising SM Projects and training engineers as appropriate.

An understanding of key hazard certification and risk management will also benefit your application.

Please note that due to the nature of the projects involved, this role is open to applications from SOLE UK NATIONALS only.

Responsibilities

The responsibilities of the role will include:

• Management of Key Hazard Certification for WTI this will involve:
– Acting as principle Reviewing Officer (RO) for WTI Certification submissions from the Submarine Projects – The RO is accountable to the Certifying Officer for this activity.
– Developing a working relationship with the Submarine Projects and undertaking Audits against WTI Key Hazard requirements.
• Reviewing, updating and where appropriate re-writing Watertight Integrity documentation including Defence Standard 02-136 – Design Policy, Principles, Testing and Acceptance Requirements for Watertight Integrity of Submarines
• Subject Matter Expert advising SM projects on design requirements, testing and acceptance of watertight integrity from concept through to laid-up submarines.
• Devise and instigate a comprehensive WTI training plan to be rolled-out across the Submarine Delivery Agency (SDA).
• Responsible for the development of a suitable level 2 engineer to the point that they will be capable of undertaking the Reviewing Officer role.

What you will be assessed against

To be found successful you must demonstrate the following essential criteria:

• Relevant Level 6 BEng (or higher) qualification OR equivalent experience within a Mechanical Engineering OR Naval Architecture environment.
• Chartered or Incorporated Engineer OR able to achieve this within 6 months of being in the post.
• Mechanical Engineering or Naval Architecture background.
• Able to demonstrate an understanding of the requirements for Watertight Integrity within RN (Royal Navy) Submarine environment OR identify transferable skills.
