The Submarine Delivery Agency (SDA) is an Executive Agency of the Ministry of Defence responsible for the procurement, in service support and disposal of the UK’s nuclear submarines. Our work is of unparalleled strategic importance nationally and internationally, ensuring the security of the UK’s continuous at-sea nuclear deterrent, and delivering the most technically complex programmes in Defence. Job description
Corporate Services offers a challenging and stimulating variety of work in both delivery and support teams. The function utilises the expertise of eight specialisms that collectively enable the operational day-to-day running of the business to ensure that DE&S/SDA delivers its objectives and maintains compliance with the requirements of being part of a Department of State. We cover: Business Support; Comms, Media & Marketing; Infrastructure & Estate Management; Policy Profession; Sales & Disposals; Occupational Health, Safety & Environment; Quality Management; and Security.
If you are interested in working on the UK’s Submarine Projects and want to support our armed forces in current and future operations, the SDA has an exciting opportunity based in Barrow-in-Furness. The SDA Principal Naval Overseers (PNO) are a team of circa 50 staff, predominantly engineers, providing independent assurance to their project team clients (Dreadnought Alliance and Submarine Production – Astute Class), that submarine build activities meet the necessary requirements of the contract. It also falls on the PNO team to ensure that Project and Engineering Risks and Opportunities identified within the build environment are effectively mitigated and/or realised.
As the Business Manager, you will be significant in providing essential business and executive support to the PNO engineering and quality teams. You will be instrumental in leading a small business group, whose functions include workforce planning and training, business management arrangements, finance, project controls and management oversight of Health & Safety.
In this progressive role, you will be required to deliver and manage a successful business management system whilst leading a high performance team and supporting their development.

Responsibilities
Responsibilities as Business Manager will include:
• Delivery of a Business Management System – engaging with multiple stakeholders across the business (including SMP, DN Alliance, the wider SDA and BAES) to develop best practice and implement relevant strategies, policies and processes which meet business requirement
• Provide advice and ensure effective business management services on a day to day level to multiple stakeholders, managing a team of direct reports
• Act as a PNO lead for civilian workforce planning, talent management and the management of policy, process and performance, as a champion for equality and inclusion
• Act as a focal point for internal communications and secretariat business, including parliamentary, freedom of information and media enquiries
• Coordinate and support implementation of continuous improvement across PNO
• Develop team members including identifying training and coaching needs specific to their subject areas and the implementation of relevant training and briefings across the business
• Develop and manage PNO performance metrics for delivery
• Managing the development and the delivery of projects to timely targets

What you will be assessed against
To be found successful you must demonstrate the following essential criteria:
• Experience of working within a large and highly complex organisation
• Knowledge of business operations
• Strong people management skills
• Experience developing, implementing, or managing a Business Management System
It would benefit your application should be able to demonstrate the following desirable criteria:
• Membership of a professional body
• A degree/NVQ Level 5 Business Admin & Management or equivalent
• Experience of working in professional/technical roles, including management of teams
• Experience of workforce planning including recruitment, management and training needs
