Job Description

Job description
Do you want to be part of a diverse multi-disciplined team and play a key role in supporting the security of the UK? If you have the pride, passion and commitment to be part of an exciting organisation at the forefront of supporting our national security then we want to hear from you.
This role offers you the opportunity to work within a diverse and multi-disciplined team, as part of the Engineering Function of the Submarine Delivery Agency (SDA). The SDA is responsible for the United Kingdom’s submarine build, in-service, dismantling and disposal, a top priority of the UK’s defence programme and one of the largest UK programmes in existence. Our Engineering function enables the delivery of equipment and support by providing specialist expertise in domain-related disciplines.
The SDA have an exciting opportunity for an Assistant Environmental Protection Engineer, at the Vulcan Naval Reactor Test Establishment (NRTE) site – located on the far north coast of Scotland, approximately 10 miles west of Thurso, next to the Dounreay civil nuclear establishment – which, for over 50 years, has directly supported the UK’s submarine service. You will have the opportunity to demonstrate your skills and experience, as the team completes its remaining operational activities and prepares to enter the challenging decommissioning phase.
Please note that, due to security requirements, this post is open to sole UK nationals only.

The focus of work in the near term will be defueling the reactor, carrying out fuel management and subsequently site decommissioning.
Working as part of a small on-site team will afford you involvement in the decommissioning programme and an opportunity to interact with the wider SDA and MOD, along with a bespoke insight into the wider submarine service. It will also offer you the opportunity to develop your training portfolio within the role and work towards a formal waste and environmental qualification.
As an Assistant Environmental Protection Engineer, you will play a key role in providing support on environmental and waste issues, whilst supporting Project Managers and the Head of Establishment at Vulcan NRTE, acting as part of the Intelligent Customer team. You will have responsibility for managing both nuclear and non-nuclear regulators, and for the management of the waste assay contract.
