The Challenge
We are looking for an experienced Safety Consultant to join our Division 5 team.
In this role, you will:
    • Provide safety support to NCDOT Highway Division 5 that is responsible for the design, construction, maintenance and operations of the state transportation network in the Triangle region, including the Durham, Franklin, Granville, Person, Wake (Raleigh), Warren and Vance counties.
    • Assess and develop safety engineering controls and designs.
    • Perform accident investigations, program auditing, and recordkeeping, industrial hygiene surveys and monitoring, and environmental engineering.
    • Develop and provide safety training and education; emergency planning; interpreting laws, standards, and codes; and reviewing and researching new or revised safety standards and laws to determine their applicability.
What You Bring
    • Considerable knowledge of OSHA regulations.
    • Considerable knowledge of federal/state safety and health codes and security regulations and best management practices.
    • Data analysis experience providing strategic direction addressing adverse trends with injuries, security incidents, or Worker Compensation.
    • Computer experience with basic/intermediate skills in Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and databases.
    • Experience managing Safety program policies, procedures, and budgets.
    • Good working knowledge of OSHA standards and recordkeeping for general industry and construction
    • Basic understanding of Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), confined space, trenching and shoring and crane safety.
    • Ability to express yourself effectively in writing and verbally to establish effective working relationships with staff.
    • Ability to investigate accidents, determine causes, and make recommendations.
    • Ability to develop and implement corrective action.
    • Skills to develop and present safety program training.
    • Ability to recognize safety hazards and unsafe acts by workers in a variety of shops and construction sites.
    • Ability to work in the heat on construction sites.
    • Able to wear a hard hat and use a respirator.
    • Ability to safely operate a State vehicle.
    • Safety toe footwear.
Education & Experience
    • Bachelor’s degree in safety engineering, industrial engineering, industrial management or technology, occupational safety, or a physical science or equivalent technical degree, and
    • 3+ years of progressive occupational and safety and health experience; or
    • An equivalent combination of education and experience.
